The drive spins when the power is plugged in but the activity/power indicator doesn't light up and the PC won't detect the drive at all. This can go on for 15mins to almost an hour these days before it lights up and detects. Its been this way out of the box and I thought it might be the way the drive was designed to operate but i've tried plugging in my friend's identical drive using my power adapter and USB cable which powers up and detects immediately. Any ideas as to what might be the problem here or just another defective product.

I would see if your drive behaves the same way on your friends PC with his cord and his power adapter. If it works fine, you know the problem exist with your PC and how it interacts with your drive. If it behaves the same way as it does on your PC, then you know there's something fishy going on with the drive. Just a guess, but in this scenario I would think its either a power or data port that isn't making a clean connection with one of the cables.
