Backup, 88 GB from fixed drive occupying over 230 GB of my Free Agent 250

(The right end of the writing area is gone.  This is written  so as to not write on the right end.)

My computer uses a Vista Home Premium operating system

"My Computer" reports:

That my 232 GB fixed disk has 200 GB of free space and

That my Free Agent, external drive has 232 GB but only 7.03 MB is free.

To me that means the external drive has almost 225 GB occupied, while only 88 GB occupies Drive C.

How do I get rid of the phantom files that are on my external drive?

Is it the usual simple issue of having an unformated space(partition) in your drive?
