Can I use FreeAgent Go to backup in DOS under Windows Repair mode? HELP!

I've been trying for days and days to save a pc that won't boot. Ends up in black screen with mouse cursor. Won't boot to safe mode, won't restore, won't repair, no ctrl-alt-del access, no fix by changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon to explorer.exe as often recommended. Can't reinstall Windows over the current version because that requires starting the reinstall from Windows. At this point I want to back my latest data off and do a clean reinstall of Win 7. HOW DO I DO THAT IF I CAN'T START WINDOWS? CAN I USE MY FREEAGENT GO TO BACK DATA OFF IN DOS while in the REPAIR MODE? The drive is already installed on that pc and has worked fine, and I can see it in DOS now, but not sure how to backup without using Windows or the Seagate software installed on Windows. Is there some sort of a run-time utility on the drive that will do that? I've been searching the KB but don't see any info... Again - - can't boot to Windows (normal or safe mode), restore back, or repair - can't install anything, like new utilities - only pc access is through booting using Win 7 CD, choosing Repair, then DOS cursor. Suggestions on how to back data off in this situation are greatly appreciated!

Re: Can I use FreeAgent Go to backup in DOS under Windows Repair mode? HELP!

Without knowing more about your system i would say no using dos. I'll recommend 2 options. The best way would be to remove the drive and put it in a working pc and copy the files to your external drive. A second method would be to get a copy of Ubuntu on a Cd and boot to it ( Don't install). Then you might be able to copy the files to the external drive. You may to run diagnostics on the drive to see if it is a physical issue with the drive. If you get that far and still have problems reply back.

Re: Can I use FreeAgent Go to backup in DOS under Windows Repair mode? HELP!

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't know how to remove a hard drive from a laptop pc. I also know absolutely nothing about ubuntu and can only access the pc in DOS window under Repair mode so not sure I could even install that once I read up on what it is. I was really hoping there was some way to use the backup drive in DOS or with some run-time utility that comes on the drive. Looking like the only option is to do a clean install of Win 7 and just lose all my recent data.   :smileysad:
