Hi,
As I think this is a Microsoft issue, I've posted this message originally in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w
But as this is going on unanswered for a very long time I've decided to post it here as well.
I have already tried what is described in http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/
Thanks.

Hi,
I am using Windows 7 RC x64. When I connect my Seagate FreeAgent Go usb drive (NTFS) and use it for some time, Windows doesn't allow me to eject it anymore. I get the following message:
"Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later."
This happens even if I all my (visible) programs are closed, even Explorer.
If I try to find who is using drive E: with ProcessExplorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/b
System
e:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$TxfLogContainer000
e:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$TxfLog.blf
e:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$TxfLogContainer000
I also noticed two diferences when I compare my FreeAgent to a regular Kingston DataTraveler flash drive (FAT32):
1) Only when using DataTraveler drive I can see an "Eject" option in Explorer's context menu. For FreeAgent I have to go to the notification tray usb icon.
2) When I run "fsutil fsinfo drivetype E:" I get "removable" for DataTraveler but "fixed"(!) for FreeAgent.
I hope someone can help, I am tired to restart my computer everytime I have to remove my drive. Thanks in advance.

Hi cb,
I'm not a computer expert but I checked the file types of the Free Agent and a Memory Stick I have and they are different. The Free Agent file type is "NTFS" and the Memory Stick is "FAT". Also checked a 4gb flash drive I have and the file type is "FAT 32".
Checked my hard drives, the file system is also "NTFS". When I click on the removal icon, it lists the Free Agent and the flash drivre but not the Memory Stick or internal hds. Maybe try reinstalling your drive, it may not be getting recognized. Hope this helps.
Good luck

I also have this problem sometimes (I use XP Pro), usually I close all folders or programs that may be open or accessing the disk - I also always switch off the Indexing-service on external FreeAgent drives when setting them up after purchase by using 'Disk Management'.
Anyway the process is 1, 2, 3 easy.
1> I load up 'Task Manager' - select the <Processes> tab.. In there will be 'explorer.exe' - select this process and click on <End Process> -- the screen background will disappear leaving just 'Windows Task Manager' program showing (this is normal).
2> Go to the 'File' menu of 'Task Manager' and select 'New Task (Run...)' -- in the box that opens up, just type in explorer and then click OK -- this restarts explorer.exe and the background screen and all usual icons etc. will show up again, wait a moment or two.
3> Now try the 'Green Safe Removal' icon at the bottom right of screen - this should respond successfully nearly immediately.
Good Luck
