Re: Computer does not recognize Seagate FreeAgent

I am having the same trouble with my computer not seeing the hard drive. One thing I have found that sometimes works is to plug in the hard drive into the computer, unplug the hard drive from the power source, plug it back in and then check to see if its working, then unplug the USB cable from the back of the hard drive, plug it back in and check again, wait 2 to 3 minutes, it still not working, repeat these 2 steps one more time.

If still not working,

turn off computer and unplug the hard drive, as computer is starting up and saying windows is about to start, plug in the hard drive.

If still not working,

repeat the steps from before and keep fingers crossed.

Doesn't work all the time, but 2 or 3 times a week, I can access it doing this, some days I just give up as its not hooking up to the computer.

Hope this helps.

I have had the exact same problem! Flashing lights and beeping but no recognition by my laptop that it exists. I am not optomistic that there is a solution to my problem after reading your post! Have you managerd to resolve your problem?

Re: Computer does not recognize Seagate FreeAgent

Hello,

If the drive is not detected by the computer, I would recommend trying the drive on another computer. Here is a knowledge base link with some steps to try.

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=211851&NewLang=en&Hilite=external...

For those using Mac Operating System, here is a link for some steps using Mac as well.

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=213059&NewLang=en&Hilite=external...

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: Computer does not recognize Seagate FreeAgent

Hi, thanks for the comments. I already tried on 2 other computers and had the same issue, therefore I am certain the problem is with the drive itself. Have tried to use the SeaTools diagnostic tool but even this cannot detect the drive!

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again.

Re: Computer does not recognize Seagate FreeAgent

Hello,

At this point, you can use this link to see if the drive is under warranty. If it is, you can process a warranty replacement.

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Test_with_SeaTools_and_Submit_Return&vgnexto...

If you cannot test the drive, on that page go under step 2 and click (help I do not have Seatools test code). After that you will get a list of the codes. You can use a code out of that list to process the return. If for some reason you are unable to process the return online, you can call our Warranty Department direct at (1.800.732.4283) and we will be more than happy to process the return for you. If you need data recovery options, data is not covered under warranty, but you can contact Seagate Data Recovery at 800-475-0143 for recovery options.

Thank you

Re: Computer does not recognize Seagate FreeAgent

Alan, you will find some information with my Drive.  It has NEVER worked.  Picked it up for a PS3, and the USB seems to see it, but it doesn't recognize as a drive.
