Computer hangs when plug 2 different Seagate drives into same computer

Hi, I have a Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB first, everything works normal, only when I recently purchased a 1TB Freeagent Desk.

I did not do any installation, when I first plugged the 1 TB into the computer, the computer detects and install the driver, and was successful. While the 1TB is still plugged in, I wanted to transfer some files from the 500GB drive to the 1TB, so I left the 1 TB drive plugged in (F:/) and plugged in the 500GB, expecting to see another Freeagent icon on My Computer folder. However, the explorer.exe always hangs when I do that. I tried using the Seagate Manager to see whether the software detects both drives, only to see the 1TB.

Is there a step that I missed to ensure that my computer can read both drives (Freeagent Go 500GB & Freeagent Desk 1TB) at the same time? Thanks.

Re: Computer hangs when plug 2 different Seagate drives into same computer

Does the system hang when you reverse the steps?

meaning plug in the 500gb first, then the 1tb.

Try connecting the drives into USB ports that are not on the same hub.

basicly if you have 4 ports on the back of your system, the top two are one hub, the second two down are another.

have the 500gb on top, the 1tb on bottom.

Also disconnecting other usb devices from the computer (aside from mouse / keyboard)

If this is a laptop and you have a USB port on eather side of the system, have the 500gb on one side, the 1tb on the other.

same situation as using different usb hubs.

Re: Computer hangs when plug 2 different Seagate drives into same computer

Yes, tried reversing (i.e. put 1TB first or the other) but the 1TB still appears instead of both 500GB and 1TB or just 500GB. Btw, I'm using a laptop to the transferring, I don't have a Desktop yet. Yes, I have tried putting different drives on different USB ports. Still not working.

I also  tried using another hard drive non-Seagate Freeagent to see whether it appears on My Computer.

Just to explain a little further, if the external hard drive is ok, I can see the 931GB free of 931GB in My Computer.

So, the moment I plug the 1TB into the computer(be it first to plug in or the reverse), the computer detects the 1TB only, while the other external drives' icons appear but inaccessible by not showing how much space is left. I have also tried right click the the other drive to see the properties, and the program just hangs there for quite some time.

This does not applies if I don't have the 1TB drive, only the 500GB.

My Computer can detect both the non-Freeagent and 500GB at the same time, and is accessible and can transfer files between them.

I have also tried going to the Device Manager under disk drives, but everything seems to appear OK with the names of the hard drives as well. No yellow exclamation mark.

Really appreciate if you can help thanks.

Thats strange to say the least.

By how you describe the events it sounds like a type of power issue.

The laptop brings up the 500gb and other brand with no problem but the 1tb and anything else the

computer can not detect the other drives because they are not pulling enough power from the USB.

To work around this type of issue you might try a Powered USB hub, which can be picked up at

just about any electronic store like bestbuy or even walmart.

Re: Computer hangs when plug 2 different Seagate drives into same computer

Yes, I have suspected a power issue, i'm afraid that I am using the wrong power plugs, because the 1TB provides a few plug types( for the power adapter, I thought that the power plug chosen is the wrong one, but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I'll try to get a powered USB hub and inform you on how things go about.

Re: Computer hangs when plug 2 different Seagate drives into same computer

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your info.

May I know which model of Belkin USB hub you got?  I got a powered APC USB hub.  It seems it can only recognize 1 HD, when I plug in the 2nd HD, it would not recognize.

Windows detect, it but it shows error on Computer Management screen.

I really need a working Power USB hub to do it, as I don't have desktop anymore.

Thanks

Re: Computer hangs when plug 2 different Seagate drives into same computer

Hi,

I'd like to specify my problem in more details.  It seems that my notebook computer's USB ports have enough power to support 3 external harderive.  They are 1 seagate 1TB Freeagent portable, and 2 WD passport portable.

When I plug in 2 WD HD, there is no problem, and then when I plug into 1 Seagate 1TB drive to it, it still has no problem.

However, once I plug in a 2nd Seage HD, either 1TB or 500GB, it would not recognize the 2nd Seagate drives.

I start thinking it is Seagate's problem, may be the way how they wrote the USB driver?

Anyway, hope I will hear response

THanks in advance.
