Delayed Write Failed

I have a refurbished Seagate Freeagent 500gb drive and I always get a "delayed write failed" message when trying to use this drive.  I've lost a lot of data because of this and the drive is pretty much useless as it is.  I've tried it on other computers and I still have the same issue.  I've also tried swapping out the USB cable and I still have the same problem.  It may work for a few minutes then it fails.  Other external hardrives on my computer do not have this problem at all.   Any Ideas???

Re: Delayed Write Failed

The FAQ shows how to change the 'write delay".
Basically if you go to My Compute, that drive, right click, choose HARDWARE, and find that drive (It should say Maxtor or Segate something), Highlight it, then click PROPERTIES. Then POLICIES
Then choose Optimize for Quick Removal.  It turns off the "write behind".

Please see the Common Issues thread at the top of this board for a link to troubleshooting delayed write failures.

Re: Delayed Write Failed

Purchased my 1.5TB back in mid-November. Took it out of the box, connected it to my Lenovo laptop, followed the instructions, backed-up my laptop hard drive, and now am essentially unable to use the drive. Everytime I plug-in the drive I get a "Delayed Write Failed" error within about 10 to 30 seconds.

Yes I have tried everything under the "Troubleshooting" section with no luck. If I didn't need the information on the drive Seagate may just be getting a package in the mail with something that resembles a hard drive. I have tired calling Customer Support but after an hour on the phone listening to the same music over and over I had other priorities in life to take care of so had to hang up.

I've read several of the other posts on this forum but everything seems to point that Seagate knows this is an issue but hasn't provided a true fix. Try this, try that is not a fix. Granted many of us on this board are probably willing to take an extra step or two to get something to work but this is ridiculous. I didn't pay $225 just to have a fancy looking paperweight. I have rocks in the yard that can serve that purpose. I always associated Seagate with quality but am quickly changing my opinion.

Apologies if this is a bit of a rant but honestly I have not come across this type of problem before. Usually it's "yes we know there is a problem and expect to have a resolution shortly" (and usually do) or "please return it and we'll refund your money".

Re: Delayed Write Failed

I will attempt to file a return claim under warranty... It just sucks that i'm losing all of my data again.  I went through the trouble shooting as well which i stated in my first post but all that got posted by moderators was a link to the same troubleshooting page...

I know its not my computer because it does the same thing on several computers.  Sorry, They do the same thing, I have two of these drives both refurbished after the first ones failed.

If it is your computer try removing all of the USB drivers on your PC (be familiar with your keyboard because it will also disconnect your mouse) and allowing windows to reinstall the USB drivers after startup.  This has worked for some people.  Goodluck.

Re: Delayed Write Failed

[ Edited ]

I agree with mbshaw77 entirely.

I have exactly the same problem, I have also tried all available solutions and read all available knowledge base articles. It's taken almost an entire day of my life to sift through all that stuff and at the end of the day I am exactly where I started.

Thanks a lot KnowledgeBase.

Can the Seagate Brains Trust please offer some help on this that's actually helpful.

Re: Delayed Write Failed

I have exactly the same problem and I'm extremely upset with seagate's customer service or rather, the LACK of it. My FreeAgent 500GB crashed just after 3 months of use and subsequently I was given a refurbished set. Then now, just after barely 4 months the drive gives me the Delayed Write Failed error together with a scratching sound.

So in fact, i've lost very important data TWICE and the website of seagate got me going around in circles. Seagate must have known that there must be something wrong with the design. I am very disappointed with SEAGATE and have filed YET ANOTHER return request. I don't think I will be able to trust whatever drive they send me again. Losing 200++GB of data TWICE is not something I want to experience for a third time.

I will make sure I post this everywhere on my social networks to spread the message about seagate's shoddy products.

Re: Delayed Write Failed

Hi all, I had exactly the same problem one week back and I had been trouble shooting it after my work to make my HDD work... its like I am working 2 jobs... seem the troubleshooting guide and it's not really friendly to our problem.

Previously I had tried to run the cmd chkdsk F: /F/R/X , where this cmd scan the surface check and fixed the error, it work for the first time, but after I restart my PC, the error came back again. This time when i execute this cmd again, it is unable to work, always stops at STEP 3 out of 5 steps...

Can the mod provide us some useful information instead of asking us to look back at the link?
