Drive makes some programs unresponsive, Drive not connected error

Im running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2

Freeagent Desktop 500 GIG SN: 9QM2WC6G, Part No: 9NK2AL-510

When I connect the drive to my computer, drive manager status icon says "drive not connected"

Drive makes a clicking sound... well its not really a clicking but more of a "tcchick" sound

Im having other problems:

Device manager shows the drive as normal

I cant open certain programs or they will just wont respond whilst the drive is connected (I cant run Seatools because it just freezes on searching for drives and will not open while the drive is connected)

So I cant test the drive as nothing responds when the drive is plugged in! As soon as I unplug either the USB or Powercord, everything responds.

Re: Drive makes some programs unresponsive, Drive not connected error

Some ideas here...

Does the drive act the same when you connect it to a different computer?

When it is connected, right-click on (My) Computer > Manage > Event Viewer.  Check in all the different categories in the Event Viewer for Errors or Warnings from that exact time when the lag occurred.  Let us know what it said.

Also, when it is connected, hit Control + Alt + Delete on your keyboard and choose the Task List/Manager.  Go to the Performance tab - what is the CPU averaging?  What happens to the Performance when you disconnect the drive?

Then go to the Processes tab, and then click on the CPU heading to organise the list of processes in order of most CPU usage.  Go down to the bottom of the list and you should see the biggest user of CPU.  What is it/are they and how much CPU is it/are they using?  And what is it?

Take a look at this thread.

Finally, I suggest uninstalling the FreeAgent software, to see how the drive reacts.
