Error launching Free Agent Tools supplied with a Free Agent Pro 750GB drive onto Vista

I recently installed the provided bundled software that came with the Free Agent Pro 750GB external drive onto an HP running Vista.  The AutoBackup software loaded fine and is working correctly.  HOwever, the Free Agent Tools software is not.  Each time I attempt to launch the software using the icon on the desktop (or in the tray), I receive an error message "Seagate Free Agent tools has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."    .... True to form, Microsoft closes the program window, and that is that.

I've tried to "reinstall" and select "repair", to no avail...anyone else ever encounter this problem when installing the bundled Free Agent Tools?

thanks in advance.

Re: Error launching Free Agent Tools supplied with a Free Agent Pro 750GB drive onto Vista

Are you using the 64-bit version of Vista.  I get the same error using the FreeAgent Tools for my 750GB drive.  I have also since learned that Seagate does not support the 64-bit version of Vista, nor have they mentioned any plan to do so.  Uh.. nice call Seagate.

I've got the 64 bit edition of Vista and get the same error message. That's BS if they're not going to support it because it's clearly listed as compatible with Vista on the website with no mention of the 64bit exception. I'm also really ticked off about the internet drive being a subsription to access it.

Re: Error launching Free Agent Tools supplied with a Free Agent Pro 750GB drive onto Vista

Like some of you guys, I run Vista 64-bit (does anyone else regret going for that option?), and yes, I too get the "Seagate FreeAgent Tools has stopped working..." message. That's a good one - it has NEVER worked since I installed it. So, I can't turn off the lovely orange lights on the unit (unless there is another way I don't know about).

Autobackup seems to work, but omg is it slow!! I'm backing up my User files only (about 20,000 files, 130GB) using firewire, and it looks like it's going to take days to complete.

And it seems to have seriously slowed down my whole machine - very annoying since I have 4 Intel Core Extreme 3GHz processors, and 4GB RAM.

I've found that the Windows Create a Complete Backup and Restore Image seems to work much faster, but is it reliable?

Any comments / advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Me too.

I'm on Vista 64 bit and the Freeagent Tools don't work. Where's the update, software that works, Seagate??

Re: Error launching Free Agent Tools supplied with a Free Agent Pro 750GB drive onto Vista

So clever me switched on 'Compatibility mode' in the program's Properties, so that Vista 64 pretends to be Win XP. That didn't work - but 'Windows 2000' did!

At least: it opens the program. I tried to change the Sleep Interval from its silly setting of 10 minutes - and it came back after a few minutes with an error. Then the drive disappeared from my system. And the Utilities diagnostics said 'Your drive needs repair, please contact Seagate'.

It's connected via USB (because the eSATA connection is so poor - and it must be USB to use the utilities anyway).

Thankfully when powered down and back on the drive is fine - but bit of a worry for a short time there. Don't recommend it!

"did you guys just plug your drives in and they worked or what?"

Yep.

Drive works plug'n'play, no drivers to install, either eSATA or USB on Vista 64 Ultimate for me..

Everything right in your BIOS, before it gets to VISTA?

Re: Error launching Free Agent Tools supplied with a Free Agent Pro 750GB drive onto Vista

I, too, have an HP with 64bit vista Ultimate which did the same things with the tools software and the attempted solutions.  I am a risk taker, so when I read the person's reply about using the compatibility with windows 2000, I decided to give it a try for the lights.  I first did the diagnostics test and all was good, then turning off the lights, and then I set the sleep to 5 minutes (I didn't want take the chance that it was the 10 minute option that caused the problem before).  I am happy to say that so far so good.  I'll let you all know if any problems do occur, but maybe this is the solution after all.

good luck, KPP
