Faulty connection?

Model: FUJITSU MHW2080BH PL

It seems that the HD will not hold it's connection any longer, should I replace the cord hat connects my laptop to the HD?  Am I in danger of loosing the information stored on this drive as well?  I am a pro photographer and have this drive backed up but am wondering if I should back up yet again?  Every time I move the either the HD or the laptop I loose connection and the drive will pop up the autoplay option like I had just plugged it in again.  When I first starting using this device it held it's connection really well even if I accidentally moved the laptop without grabbing the HD it would stay connected.  Not sure where the poblem is located but I'm getting concerned that I could loose photos and/or hours of work in process.  Maybe I should just a get a new one all together???

Please advise!

Re: Faulty connection?

A loose connection could cause you to lose data.

If you lose the connection when the computer is writing to the hard drive then there is a chance that the drive file structure could be corrupted and the drive may become unreadable.

Replacement cables are cheap, certainly cheaper than a few hours work for a professional photographer.

Re: Faulty connection?

There are many reports of connection problems with the micro-USB connectors at WD's forums. Perhaps yours is a similar issue, in which case you'll need to resolder the connector on the PCB, or transplant the drive into a third party enclosure.

Re: Faulty connection?

^^ That sounds scary and like I'm just moments away from loosing all the photo's there.  Think I'll just get a new one.  Any suggestions for a tried and true external HD that is very reliable?

Re: Faulty connection?

External HDDs are hotboxes. Therefore my personal preference is for a third party enclosure that is made from aluminium, is fan cooled, and has as many interfaces as possible, including USB 3.0, firewire. and eSATA. Not only does this provide you with a versatile device, but if one interface fails, then you may still be able to retrieve your data via one of the others.

Incidentally, Seagate recently acquired LaCie, a manufacturer/assembler of external storage devices. I wonder what Seagate gets out of that arrangement.
