I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB HD that I bought roughly 3 months ago. I use it on a Mac (which is loaded with both Mac OS 10.5.7 and Windows Vista). I had the usual problems with the mac of the drive going to sleep when I first started using the drive. But searching through the forums, I found that I could disable the powering off with the windows utility and I did so. After that it was working just fine for well over a month.
Now, all of a sudden it's cropped up a new problem where it unmounts/ejects after being connected to the mac for a very short time (I didn't actually time it, but I'd say roughly under a minute each time.)
I've gone back to windows and made sure that the powering off option in the seagate utility is set to never. I've also downloaded the new mac seagate diagnostics package and installed it (but strangely, the diagnostics app does not recognize the drive even for the short while that it remains functional.) A couple of points I'd like to add, the drives works perfectly in Windows and even when it unmounts on the mac, the light remains on and the disc continues to spin.
Any ideas on what might be wrong and how I could fix it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if I can't fix it, would Seagate take the drive back seeing as I've had it for three months and there are a few scratches on it and I don't have the original power adaptor ?

I am experiencing virtually verbatim the issues you raise.

So much for power saving. I've found this to be especially annoying and I wish Seagate would either address the issues you've raised (and as I also experience) or else stick to making drives for Windows-based systems and leave the cross-platform business to Western Digital.

MODERATOR: CAN WE HAVE A VIABLE RESOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE PLEASE?
This is absurd. Went to use Final Cut a moment ago and one of the disks - a 1.5TB Seagate Free Agent - was missing as it had dismounted itself.
Why is this issue being ignored? Why haven't any Engineers addressed this issue in this Forum? It begs the question if Seagate is well aware of this issue but would prefer to bury it's head in the sand then deal with it.
Good money was paid for your products and they're not performing. THIS IS A PATENTLY ANNOYING AND TIME CONSUMING ISSUE.

Then at minimum you need the capability to involve Engineering in an issue such as this; there needs to be a resolution to this problem. It is very, very annoying.

I have the same problems with this drive (going to sleep and not waking up) when using F/W or USB connection on my MacBook Pro
and while I have not found a solution to this (I can't even deselect the sleep option in Windows for some reason), I noticed something interesting:
The drive works exactly as it should (goes to sleep when inactive and wakes up when needed) when it's hooked to my Airport Extreme!!!
Go figure...
