If those pics are personal digital photos in which those are your only copy, you need to visually verify the copy by looking at the reported file sizes in the directory they are stored in.
Such precious data is best to be dual backed up, a second source being burned on dvd from the original copy.
But if single backup is your choice, just verify they did in fact move to the external drive before you delete the masters.
Same goes of course for your documents.
