well, it may not be good enough, but that's all I can do.
At any rate, I can understand your desire to know what failed, but sometimes stuff just fails. There are numerous things in a drive that can fail... sorry I can't help more

I can lump myself in to this pile as well. I have the "classic" (didn't take long for it to become classic) Free Agent DeskTop I have backed up once. Now the thing is not being recognized and beeps every ten seconds for a couple of minutes. Then it just sits there with the light band on. The power supply has no led.
The mod dismissed this to the trouble shooter, but the trouble shooter does not address this issue as the earlier posted noted. The contributer says it probably failed. Really? One use? Other have the same problem. Had it a little over 6 months. This thing is for safety? Is this why they changed designs so quickly? Is it really disposible? Should I just buy a new one? ... I mean, why should I buy another Free Agent? I can't trust them, can I?

I have the exact same problem. One month old drive filled with 1tb of highly valubale data like 10 years of family photos.
Drive lights up but fan doesn't spin and faint beep every 5-10 seconds.
XP doesn't recognize a drive has been connected at all so Seagate utility software will not work.
Troubleshooting guide useless as it asumes drive is visible but unreachable.
Wake up Seagate!
Stop pretending this is not an existing issue!

Just wanted to bump this thread since my Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme 1.5tb just stopped working and started beeping instead. Has anyone found a solution yet?

The drive is dead. You can get it replaced under warranty I believe. The solution on the other hand is to not get a FreeAgent Xtreme 1.5TB.

To all that have posted on this thread, yes, your drive is dead.
I contacted Seagate's tech people and they said that my drive is a gone'r and that I needed to send it in for warranty repair. This has been a quick turn around as, I sent it in last week and they have already sent it back (hasn't arrived yet).
I used mine once before it failed. I am not to sure how much I want to see the 'repaired' one. This is supposed to be a safeguard. Thousands of hours of work is in jeopardy and although they are sending me a repaired unit, can I trust it?

It sickens me to read these posts and not see Seagate have or offer a solution. Yes, they will replace our drives under warranty but who really wants another one? I want my pictures and documents! THAT I WAS USING AS A BACK UP! I put everything on my Freegate to take my laptop back to factory settings and the next day when I went to put them back on my laptop, my Freegate was dead! LESS THAN ONE MONTH OLD! THANK YOU SEAGATE! Data recovery service that Seagate recommends wants $1700.00! Yes, $1700! Yes, Kechan, you got it right--- they are LEMONS! Where are you Seagate???????

Yes it sickens me too.
I mean, it is just stupid on so many levels. I am in a foreign country right now and made backups for important stuff like study material, work, documents etc but also entertainment in form of movies, music and TV-series. The second day I arrived to the new country my drive failed and there is nothing I can do about it. Sending it back and getting a new one for the warranty is a real hassle since I have no real fixed adress right.
I'm so disapointed. Me and my family will never use Seagate again I will recommend all my friends not to buy one unless Seagate shows just the slightest interest in adressing the issue.
