JayZ_WA,
I've been lusting for a Drobo for a long time, but can't justify the cost. The HP EX485 is a good choice for a central Home Server. The S3 ability sounds like a nice feature if you can afford it. In reading the Specs it sounds like it is does not mirror or a Raid the HD's. It keeps multiple files? How do you recover the Data if a HD does fail or a lightning strike? I know you backup of the Server.
Thanks for your participation in the Forum.

Well, I have the same problem, here's my story :
I bought a 750GB Seagate FreeAgent Pro from Frys electronics because it was on sale, i bought it in September 2008, i was using it when it tipped over maybe 2 - 4 inches from the ground, and now it's beeping with the light glowing, we have personal stuff on it and it was the only backup we had, someone please post or email us some good deals on other brands that are trusted AND GOD LET SEAGATE GO BANKRUPT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Drobo seemed great, the HP EX485 seemed uniquely different but also serving the same purpose. The S3 addition would be even better, if it was more affordable!
With the EX485 you can turn on Duplication for various folders - if you would have this full of drives, it will then store file/folder on drive 1 for example and also on drive 3, another might be stored on drive 1 and drive 2. Drive 2 dies, you have all files intact ... remove failed drive and you are still in business. This is selective so I use this on files I store off exclusively external. Other files that are backed up from my desktop I don't duplicate since it's my second copy. Similar to being mirrored except you can selectively choose what is duplicated, possibly saving space and balancing this across 3 drives (1st drive is primarily reserved for system files or will be used when others reach capacity).
Then, I have an external drive that I will backup server to and once I get back my dreaded Seagate 1.5TB warranty exchange, I will also rotate that on the external backup and store one offsite.
I really am suprised it hasn't gained more exposure, it seems like an awesome product, easy to use/setup and I can't say enough about support. I have been around technology/consumer electronics for quite a few years and have never had quite the ease of interaction! Usually when I think about calling support and trying to resolve issue my blood pressure rises right after I dial the phone! With HP, this group has been phenomenal.

I just bought seagates free agent Go 500 GB external harddrive to back up my data after crash of my notebook computer and another seagate external harddrive i had failed after less than one year.. Now less than one week and only 5 or 6 transfers of files to it, Seagates external harddrive is not recognizing or allowing transfer of files from or to it and just beeps every second or two!

As of Sunday, July 19, 2009-
My FreeAgent Pro 500 gb drive crashes any computer you try to hook it to.
I found this out when the computer it was initially connected to wouldn't start.
It's the only time I've seen the Blue Screen of Death in any of my Windows XP machines-Pro OR Home.
I've got a 1TB drive I haven't opened yet, it's being returned.
I can't trust these things now.

oh my gosh
All my memories are gone making a consent beep ,humm, buzz or what ever you want to call it will not come up on my laptop anymore all of my family photos, video's and so much more I feel like I was just in a FIRE and lost all my personal memories. I can not afford a data recovery for over $1500.00 or more that if the disk wasn't damaged they said. I am going to put post out where ever I go to band this product because I'm not the only one having this problem. Writing to the BBB and the companies that carry this product and who ever else that will listen to me about this. This product is a very important product for most of us out here and it maybe one of there smaller items they sell and to them may not be a big issue but if the consumer is buying this product as a backup for most of there computer data than this company see that this is a serious issue.
If anyone know of any place that can recover data at a reasonable amount please HELP!
