FreeAgent Desk for Mac is not recognized

My new FreeAgent Desk for Mac (1.5Tb) is not recognized by my computer running Mac OSX Leopard.

The drive has a very subtle vibration, so I believe it's getting power.  I don't see any lights on, but don't know if there are supposed to be any.

When I plug in with USB, no icon appears on the desktop and there's nothing showing in Disk Utility.  In System Profiler, it appears as a "composite device" from "Oxford Semiconductor Ltd."

Using FireWire (both 400 and 800), it's the same except that the drive is listed as an "unknown device" in System Profiler.

I've tried restarting, trying different sockets, etc.  No go.

Can some one help?

I've done all the stuff suggested in the link.  Still no joy.

Re: FreeAgent Desk for Mac is not recognized

I just got one of these 1.5Tb FreeAgent|Desk for Mac also. Set it up last night so I can tell you there should be light come out from the base of the disk unit, ie shining down the leg/stand thing.

I think yours is a complete dud which is a blessing in a way...

I copied over 200Gb of stuff onto mine and now it hangs Finder when I try to browse the driv, and effectively the whole computer is screwed - can't even restart, needs a hard power off - or just yanking out the FW cable!

So seems the 1.5Tb drives are damaged goods too. Question is, even if there is a fix soon, will we have enough faith?!

Re: FreeAgent Desk for Mac is not recognized

I have the same drive and the same issue as shreddy in msg 4 above; at least when connected with FireWire 800 (I assume 400 would give the same issue since it is just an adaptor). However, when using USB 2.0, the drive seems to function normally.

When connected with FW800, the drive would initially function okay. Disk Utility would see it, and I could verify/repair the drive with a drive-appears-okay message. However, about 25 minutes into a Super Duper! back up, Super Duper and the Finder would both freeze. I could not force quite SD nor could I restart the Finder. I had to hard reboot the machine and also had no bootable backup during this time.

Though the drive does work with USB 2.0, I had specifically bought it as to take advantage of the FW800 port on the iMac (not used for anything else I own and frees up USB ports for the vast amount of USB peripherials I do own). It's a realy shame.

Did you ever get any resolution to this problem ... my G5 and FADrive are experiencing the same issues.

Re: FreeAgent Desk for Mac is not recognized

Sorry as my post will be "I've got this problem too" kind of posting. A year and a half ago I bought Freeagent Go and a Freeagent 500 GB. I used the first one as time machine backup and the desktop I use it very rarely, just to store backups.

Some day the Go was not recognised either and there was no way to mount it. The good thing is that they sent me a refurbished one which still function now. Of course the data was lost but lucky enough it was just a backup so I had the original.

But the desktop Freeagent classic is a real pain in the **bleep**. Sometimes when it is connected it just removed itself: I suddenly got a Warning: "Device Removal...". And on other time my MacBookPro just won't recognised the drive so I had tounpu/plug several time before it is recognise. And on one day even that is not working.

So here I am with this 'state of the art' design and for my feeling - a new hd - that just has been used 'several times'. I rather have an ugly hd that just do the work. Yes I did try the seagate procedure and contacted helpdesk but I don't have any confidence that they are able to help me. Communication takes ages and even if they propose for sending me a refurbished one again, that won't do the job I'm afraid because I lost confidence in the disk and that is a bad thing: data should be safe and the storage space should be reliable.I just sick and tired toget stuck with another piece of technology that don't do the work it promised.

Re: FreeAgent Desk for Mac is not recognized

The Seagate drive goes to sleep after a period of time (I thought it was 15 minutes rather than the 25 you report) and won't wake up.

Seagate has software for the Mac that is supposed to fix this, but I am almost certain it does not do so.

Look in MacUpdate or VersionTracker for KeepDriveSpinning - there's also another program, use whichever you prefer - to aolve this particular problem.
