FreeAgent Go 120GB can't see all folders to back up Shared files in WinXP

Running a new FreeAgent Go 120G (Model ST901203FGA1E1-RK) and I have all the music loaded in a shared folder.  When I browse to my C: drive, I cannot see the "Documents and Settings" folder.  I am the primary user and have Admin rights to the computer.  How can I back up all the files in the Shared folders when I can't select the check box in Ceedo or FreeAgent Launcher?

Re: FreeAgent Go 120GB can't see all folders to back up Shared files in WinXP

I am having the same problem.  Can't backup "documents and settings" (e.g., any other my documents of other users or shared my documents folders).  Read something related to this in FAQ about perhaps setting appropriate XP user permissions but doesn't seem to work.   I have admin rights to PC.  Eagerly awaiting some feedback from Seagate.

Alternative I am getting close to is installing competitor product WDSync (Western Digital's sync software) on this drive - works out of the box on my other external drive.

Re: FreeAgent Go 120GB can't see all folders to back up Shared files in WinXP

dodger, couldn't agree more.  CNET rated these units highest, and I, too, tried the permissions "fix" (which fixed precisely nothing).  I have a WD Passport for work..."better the enemy you know" and all that.  I like the idea of Ceedo's allowing me to transport software since I travel constantly & carrying a personal laptop is not conducive to successfully weaving thru crowds at airports to catch flights.  Got tired of waiting online for chat support the other evening--bailed after 40 mins.  Hopefully a Seagate eye or two is browsing this board...though I suspect another user will fill in first.  LOL

I called Seagate technical support and was told you CANNOT back up your Shared Documents folder with FreeAgent drives (I have the 500 GB one). Their solution -- move all your Shared Documents to My Documents so you can back up your files. Great....

Gimme my money back (was Re: FreeAgent Go 120GB can't do basic back up Shared files in WinXP)

How ridiculous!!  Had I known that, I never would have spent the money I did on a product that can't do something as simple as point to a folder I want synchronized & backed up!

Seagate: "We recommend you completely blow the purpose of having shared folders and move everything back to My Documents.  We want to keep supporting Windows 98 thinking."

Ugh.  How do I get my money back so I can buy a competing product that works?  That was clearly not on any of the packaging or clearly explained anywhere on their website.  And we newbies have figured out what no one on their "support" website has even addressed. :smileymad:

The box says:
"With software tat lets you access your content from anywhere, share it with anyone, and sync it to almost anything."

...except folders you want to share??   What the heck?

Hopefully a tech will chime in with a real solution.

I am having the same issues with my Free Agent 250GB external hard drive, model ST302504FDA1E1-RK. I cannot see my Documents and settings, Program files, or Windows folders. And like most of you I have alot in my Document and Settings folder I would like to back up.

Called tech support (had to push 1 for english) :manmad: and was told (as some you you) if I want to backup my Documents and Settings folder I have to copy the info into My Documents folder and save from there. This sucks!!! It is also very misleading from what they say on the box. This will be my last Seagate product and I'll spread the word. Oh........and the tech I talked to could barely speak english.................I thought I pushed 1 for english.

Re: FreeAgent Go 120GB can't see all folders to back up Shared files in WinXP

I too have encountered this incredibly stupid software omission on my FreeAgent Desktop model no. ST303204FDB1E1-RK when trying to back up shared documents, pictures, and music from my Dell PC running Windows XP.  When I contacted Seagate's tech support, I was told that the software does not support backing up such files and that they were not aware of any third party application or software that would support such action.  Agree wholeheartedly that Seagate, at a minimum, is guilty of false advertising regarding this product's capabilities.  More to the point, the firm is perfidious in the extreme in developing and marketing products that do not meet the average user's needs.   What a bunch of mendacious money-hungry individuals intent on misleading consumers!  Would return this totally useless product if I could, but regrettably the retailer from whom I purchased this device has a return policy of very short duration.  Has anyone had any luck finding a software solution from a third party?

Five months--and counting.  I was under the impression customer service & technical reps prowl sites like these looking for opportunities to help customers, but I have heard nary a peep from anyone at Seagate.

Will one of you please mark my post as "abuse" & see if we can get a response?  I even asked for escalated level technical support (Level 2?) & they were as equally clueless & useless at the entry level support people.

I am baffled that this kind of functionality was not incorporated.  I'd just like to know why/how it was excluded.  I can't possibly think of a rational reason unless there's some issue with how Microsoft's "shared" folders somehow prevent you from doing it.  But if that's the case, then rr66 is exactly right, and Seagate should let people know, "By the way, don't purchase this tool if you want to back up Shared Folders."
