FreeAgent | Go Not Recognised - Tried Everything!

Hi All,

I have a FreeAgent | Go, I think it's 160 Gig, it's one of the pocket sized black and orange ones which take power from the USB only.

The other day I plugged it into a mates PC to grab a file, then remembered it was somewhere else so I pulled it out unsafely (like I always do) ever since then the disk is just not recognised.

So far I've tried it on 4 different machines all running XP w. SP2 or 3, one of which was a fresh install since the last time I saw it working. At first I just got nothing but tonite it started to be detected by one machine but comes up as an unknown device, the other machine still just doesn't see it.

Since it started coming up unknown I've tried removing everything, uninstalling everything right down to the USB controllers, rebooting about a zillon times, registry hacks and whatever else I found while googling the error message but I still get this every time I connect the drive;

USB Device has malfunctioned and is not recognized.

If I hold the drive up to my ear all I hear is a gentle hum, which sounds perfectly normal so I suspect the drive itself is OK it's just something with the USB controller on the drive.

Does anyone have any idea's on how one might fix this issue, or alternatively any idea on how to pull these things apart without destroying the plastic casing? so far I can't even see a screw hole.

Any idea's will be very much appreciated.

Thanx in Advance!

Re: FreeAgent | Go Not Recognised - Tried Everything!

Oh yeah, a little bit more info...

The FreeAgent drive is the ONLY device which has this issue, my MP3 player and flash disk both work fine, the FreeAgent still comes up as 'Unknown'. This is true even after a fresh install.

And some quick specs in case it matters.

WinXP SP3.

Asus A8NSLI.

Athlon FX 55.

NV GF 6800GT (x2).

I've tried the latest drivers for all...

Thanx in Advance.....

Re: FreeAgent | Go Not Recognised - Tried Everything!

it sounds like the drive died, yeah, but maybe the internal one is ok

Just replace it if you have your data saved elsewhere.  Don't pull it apart or you'll void the warranty.
