FreeAgent Pro and Time Machine

I have a FreeAgent Pro ESATA USB Firewire 400 drive that I"ve been trying to use with Macintosh's Time Machine backup program via the Firewire connection.  My computer is a G4 Power PC 1.25 Ghz imac with 768 RAM and 80 G HD (25 Gb available).  I've had big problems with the drive being recognized and not mounting.

The error "The backup drive could not be found" appears usually  when the scheduled backup occurs while the computer is asleep.  The backups work fine while the computer is not in sleep mode, and they continue to work if I restart or startup the computer, but when I check the status of the backup after the mac has been asleep, the error always occurs.

The problem could have something to do with the firewire connection.  I've reset the ports by unplugging and turning the computer off for 1/2 hr, then restarting and plugging the drie back in, but the probelm persists.

I looked in the FreeAgent Pro preferences for a way to change the sleep settings of the drive, but no such option exists contrary to the trouble shoots info included with the softare.

Has anyone had any similar issues?
