FreeAgent Pro works <10min

FreeAgent Pro 500Gb (9NL6AG-500).  Started when I noticed that the drive was no longer detectable by the OS (XP or 7).  It would show up when you first turned the PC on, then less than 10 minutes later it was no longer there...yet I could still feel the drive spinning and the lights were still on.  I have another Seagate drive (on the same machine and it works fine) so I swapped the USB and power cables and it still did the same thing.

Access speeds also slow down over the 10min period to a snail's pace as it slowly dies.  I tried to get files off quickly as soon as I started the drive up, I was able to get some files off initially, but now it only copies over the folder structure and nothing else.  I ran the Seagate Tools diagnostic and it came up with the following code:  AFDED046 to which I haven't found anything on the net about and it said I needed to return the drive to Seagate.

Would I be able to crack this open and find alternate means of connecting it to the computer?  I almost think that it's the USB eSATA connection that might be bad and the drive itself is ok.

I really need to be able to get the data off this drive as it was my backup and contains all my family pictures and personal documents.  Any help would be appreciated.

AIUI, the failing test is encoded as the digit "4" in your error code. I don't know which test this is, though.

About SeaTools Test Codes:

http://seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=wvc&vgnextoid=573797f40cce3210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD

"SeaTools Test Codes are based on the type of test that failed and the product serial number. No two codes are the same. The online RMA submission system will use the SeaTools Test Code number to help process the exchange of your product. The code tells Seagate that the drive is, in fact, bad and that there is virtually no chance that a good drive is being returned."

If you wish to connect your drive to your computer's motherboard, here are instructions for disassembling a Seagate FreeAgent Pro:
