After chatting with Seagate and learning the two purchased drives were defective, I returned the first and exchanged it for a second one and it also failed and would not do a complete backup. As advised by Seagate chats I did the Seagate window tools generic long term test again on the second one which confirmed it was defective and failed the test like the first one. Best Buy was at a lost as to whether to try another or exchange it for different brand. I exchanged the defective second one for a FreeAgent eSata 1500 GB drive (more $$) and connected it using the firewire cable connector and all is well and it is working fine. The eSata cable connection did not work (did not recognize or see the drive) so using the firewire connection works fine! I am satisfied at this point, but wondering and waiting to see if the drive fails in time as I have been reading the forum and others are experiencing a variety of different failures and frustrations. I am only doing backup of data until I feel secure enough in time to use it also for storage when it may be necessary. By the way my wifes FreeAgent Desk 1500 GB drive is still working with no problems!! Again only using for backup at this time. Like to hear from others.
