Freeagent Desk - Error 1605 when trying to install Seagate Manager

[ Edited ]

I am trying to help out my mom who purchased the FreeAgent Desk backup drive. She initially installed the Seagate Manager but it's not working properly. I've tried to uninstall it and re-install it, but I keep getting an error. When I try to uninstall the Seagate Installation Manager I get a 1628 Error message. I don't have any other Seagate application listed in the Uninstall window. If I try to re-install the manager that is on the device, I get a Error 1605 saying that it can't be done.

Can someone provide some insight on what I can do to get the Manager fixed/re-installed?

Thanks!

Re: error 1628 uninstall seagate manager

Same here. Got the FreeAgent Go 320 GB

I tried do uninstall Seagate Manager but got both errors. Trying to remove it via Windows' control panel (Add/Remove Programs) gets me the 1628. I don't even get to the point where one can choose to reinstall, repair or remove the manager.

Executing the setup file on the hard drive I can choose to reinstall, repair or remove but each of them lead to error 1605.

The "fix" for 1628 didn't help. There is no other installation process running, I got the latest Windows Installing Engine (XP SP3), and the TEMP folder is empty.

So for the solution on 1605: http://consumerdocs.installshield.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q107475&sliceId=1

I don't know where I have to set the REINSTALLMODE. In which file do I have to set this?

I am able to reproduce the walk through until I have to delte the *.msi file. It is placed at C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{'put in some keynumber'}

and it's called 'Seagate Manager Installer.msi'

Has anyone solved this yet?

Any hints will be appreciated!

Re: Freeagent Desk - Error 1605 when trying to install Seagate Manager

The problem obviously embarked with the update I previously did.

As the removing by usual modes didn't work, I looked for a program that uninstalls other programs and found Revo Uninstaller. --> http://www.revouninstaller.com/

This indeed helped uninstalling and getting rid of all seagate manager traces.

I reinstalled the Seagate Manager that came with my drive (2.1.48) and now its ok again.

So far for me this is solved.

Re: error 1628 uninstall seagate manager

I am very annoyed. I have the same problem.

Windows 7 64bit and FreeAgent Seagate Manager cannot be uninstalled. I get error  1628, and even setting Windows back to the Restore Point before tying to uninstall does not help. I cannot set Windows back to when I installed Seagate Manager as I would lose to many other programs and settings.

The solutions provided by Seagate link back to pages that don't even know of Windows Vista! Am I supposed to follow the Windows 98 solution instead?

THANKYOU SEAGATE FOR OFFERING US SUCH AN ANNOYING PROGRAM THAT CANNOT BE UNINSTALLED AGAIN.

I am using NERO BACKITUP now which is hands down better than Seagate backup. Unfortunately I have to get rid of Seagate first because it interferes at random times with Nero Backitup, claiming it is its disk and other programs are not able to use the disk anymore!

I deeply regret having Seagate Manager installed!

These links are worthless.  Either they don't open or direct you to links which don't open.

For me only this link works:

1628 - http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/ search.jsp?DocId=189591&NewLang=en

If you want to reinstall Seagate Manager I'd recommend to uninstall it with Revo Uninstaller and reinstall the Manager. See my post above.

Hello Gentlemen. Sry to hear about your woes.

IMHO - MS is more to be blamed for the shortcomings of MSI.

Please use this utility to clean up the problematic msi installtion

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml

Using this program, browse to the entry.

Also - delete any other files associated with this program on the disk.

You can finish things off by a scan of a registry cleaning program like 'Registry Mechanic' By pctools.

A Pentium III, 256MB RAM and 10GB HDD are needed to run Windows XP.
The power of 3 C64 was needed to fly to SPACE.
Something is wrong with our world...
And its called WINDOWS!
