I have a Sony DVP-NS328 dvd player, which has usb support. I have been using it with flash drives for a while. Just recently, I bought seagate freeagent 250gb external hard drive, and tried to connect it to the dvd player, but player keeps showing "no usb" when it is connected.
I thought it was because of the external hdd's format (which was ntfs), and I converted it to fat32. However, it didn't help. It still shows the "no usb" error when it is connected.
External hdd works fine on the computer by the way. What should I do to get it work with the dvd-player? Am I missing something?
A standard USB port is current limited to 500mA. Your FA drive probably requires 400mA when running, but around 850mA during spin-up. Perhaps the Sony doesn't have enough power for the FA drive? Or maybe the FA drive powers up in standby (PUIS) and the Sony player doesn't know how to turn it on?
If you pause your PC during the BIOS screen and then plug in your FA drive, does it still spin up?
FWIW, here are some service manuals for similar model names:
