Freeagent Pro 1TB drive makes buzzing noise.

Hi everyone,

I connected my external drive this morning on my laptop and it just started making this buzzing noise at fixed intervals of 5 seconds (sounds like it's coming from the base/power unit) and no partition is being mounted.

Also, the orange light keeps flashing every 5 or so buzzing noises.

I called Seagate and they told me that it's something to do with the fan. (not letting the hard disk boot up)

They're able to replace the hard disk, but this is not what I'm really worried about. It's the data that's inside. Is there any way to get the data off my disk and then asking seagate to replace the hard disk?

From their side, it seems like it'd cost from £400-£1000.

Thanks

Please see the Common Issues thread at the top of this board and check the detection problems troubleshooter for your OS.

Re: Freeagent Pro 1TB drive makes buzzing noise.

As far as I've seen, there's nothing that describes my problem.

my hard disk is not clicking. it's making a buzzing noise constantly.( after a long period of time, that buzzing noise stops...and it just doesn't mount).

i'd be grateful if you could kindly help me or link me to any relevant threads.

Re: Freeagent Pro 1TB drive makes buzzing noise.

Also, worth the notice, after a reasonable amount of time, the noise goes off and the orange light stops flashing every 5 buzzes or so. I've tried running it on both mac os x and windows, disk utility does not recognize the drive in any way whatsoever and windows does not recognize it, not even as a USB device, either. I've tried both Firewire and USB interfaces on mac os x and USB on windows.

Result: No sign of any partition or information about the hard disk

Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Especially the cause of the buzzing noise? I've searched google, the knowledge base, the common thread topics and I've found nothing really that describes the problem I'm dealing with.

Thanks

I don't know about the buzzing, but did you reformat the drive?

Please anyone....I would greatly appreciate it if anyone who's already encountered something similar and managed to find a solution.

Re: Freeagent Pro 1TB drive makes buzzing noise.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. I dropped a 1TB Freeagent Pro, and now it won't start and it makes the same buzzing sound you describe. Have you found anything that might help?

Thanks!!

Re: Freeagent Pro 1TB drive makes buzzing noise.

Same problem here.  We will be returning and exchanging the drive. However, we have PRIVATE data on it that cannot be accessed and we would like to have it erased.

No computers recognize the drive. Sea Tools Diagnostics cannot find it. The hard drive has failed. When a hard drive is returned to Seagate, what can be done about the private data on it??

Re: Freeagent Pro 1TB drive makes buzzing noise.

you have to get data recovery first, if you want the data
if you dont want it, dont worry about it - seagate gets 100s of returned drives a week.  theyre a huge global company - if peoples data were leaking out, thered be lawsuits on top of lawsuits.  they destroy the data

-if you didn't back up your junk, you didn't need it after your drive crashed
