Generally Whacks Out Windows.

I haven't found my problems listed anywhere after a considerable amount of searching.  Hopefully some one out there can help.  Hopefully the discussion can help others.  Here's what's up.

If I try to shut down or restart Windows while the drive is plugged in or if it has been plugged in and unplugged Windows never finishes shutting down.

The drive appears but is inaccessible.  When listing the drive under Computer it shows up as Local Disk (F:smileyhappy: alongside my other drives where it used to be something more descriptive like FreeAgent Go (F:smileyhappy:.  The progress bar at top slowly gets to almost the very end and stops.  That also happens if I select the drive.  If I try to close that Windows Explorer box I get Not Responding and must use the Task Manager.

Device Manager under Disk Drives lists Seagate FreeAgent Go USB Device

Then in Properties:

under General tab says device is working properly.

under Volumes Tab there is no info listed and populate button locks up and must be stopped with Task Manager.

under Driver shows version 6.1.7600.16385

When using SeaTools for Windows after pressing Scan I get the dialog box "USB:  Scanning for supported drives.  Please wait..." and it will not move past that .

When the drive is not plugged in SeaTools works fine.

I've tried all the USBs on my computer and on my hub and another laptop running XP with the same results.

The drive lights up and seems to spin at normal rate and doesn't click excessively.  My hypothesis is the problem lies in the circuitry between the drive and the USB out on the drive.  I have an old easy to disassemble external hard drive that I am tempted to try swapping the drives in but figure this will void my warranty.  Although if that's the case and I am correct then any data recovery place would void my warranty.

Drive info: Seagate FreeAgent Go External USB Hard Drive.  500GB.  PN:9ZA2AH-509.  SN:2GE50CKX

I'm running Widows 7 home basic 32 on an older Sony Vaio Laptop.  The drive in question has worked for me for at least a year and has not been dropped or anything to my knowledge.

Thank you in advance for any help!!!
