I have a Free Agent Desk 1.5TB external drive that has just stopped working. I only get a steady blinking white light on it. I am new here and a bit of a newbie when it comes to things like this. I have searched the forum but have not found anyone else having the same problems. Windows does not recognize the drive at all any more in device manager; I have tried unplugging and replugging in the device; Seagate tools doesn't recognize the drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am at wits end as to what the problem is and whether I am going to loose all my data on this drive now.
Thanks

Hi fzabkar...
Can you tell us the model number of the drive, eg ST31500xxxAS, and the series, eg 7200.12?
It is a Free Agent Desk 1.5TB external drive- Model #ST315005FDB2E1-RK (had to find the box to get the Model #...it's not on the drive itself).
You will need to remove the drive from its enclosure. This may void your warranty, so you might try obtaining an OK from Seagate Tech Support for what you want to do.Unfortunately, I am having trouble reaching Seagate, so I'm really hesitant about opening the enclosure. I don't want to void my warranty. The one time I did reach Seagate before posting here, they told me I'd have to send the drive in. I'm concerned about all my data on the drive though. Will I still be able to retrieve it?
Thanks for your help...

Alan, sorry for the delay in answering you, there was a death in the family and I was out-of-town.
Just before starting my post on this forum I had tried to call Seagate. I called the main number listed on the website and asked for support. There I was met with a very rude gentleman (believe his name was Jason or Justin) who refused to answer any questions once he looked up my unit and said telephone support was no longer available for it (I bought the drive on 04/19/09). He told me I would have to go on line and use Live Chat or send an email. He wouldn't even answer me when I asked him if anyone else has called to complain about the same problems or if he could even tell me what may have caused the problem. He just kept getting more abrupt, cutting me off and telling me to go on line and use Live Chat. Then he hung up on me.
Live Chat (spoke with Leslie C) was even worse. I never got a distinct answer as to what the problem is with this drive. I kept getting redirected to Warranty Return. She kept asking me to go to device manager to see if my PC recognized the drive and wanted me to perform Seagate tools. Kept telling her that my device was not recognized no matter what I tried. It simply sits there with a blinking white light. (I kept a copy of this chat session). Long and short of it, I was directed to warranty/return and to try i365 for data recovery.
I am still clueless as to what is actually wrong with this device and whether or not my data is recoverable. If it's recoverable, can it be done before shipping it out?

This whole thing is very sad to hear.... why? Because it is the SAME thing that is wrong with mine.
I have spent the last two hours
looking online trying to find an answer to what is wrong with my drive. I am not sure when I got it, I got it at Costco, so they know when, but it was at least 6 months ago... I was using mine fine the other day, then last night I turned it on and NOTHING. The only thing it does is beep for about 5 minutes, then stops even that. I searched the whole "Knowledge Base" and several sites....
What I have discovered is that this seems to be a problem with these drives.
Seems that they "lock up" and lock you out for no real reason, after while. That there is a firmware fix, but unless you know about the problem ahead of time, you are basically screwed as you only find out when your unit breaks.
Another thing I found out is that you can't do anything to make it work.
You can get the data recovered, at a great cost to you, even though Seagate seems to know of this problem, thus I believe THEY should foot the bill when it inevitably happens to your drive. And that before you send in your unit for replacement, make sure to get your data off or it is gone forever.
The things I've read in the last two hours have saddened me. I bought the external drive not so that it would make it easier to go from one computer to another, but because I've often had computers break down, or get old and get a new one, and it takes so much to try to save my photos and stories and all my work that I wanted to have it in one place that I knew it was safe. Now the cold hard fact has hit me that nothing really is "safe".
The external drives are just as likely to screw you over as the internal ones. And where it was inconvenient to get the data off the older computers, it never cost me to do it. Now with the external ones, ones they knew had a problem with locking you out, it's going to cost me to get my data and be a total pain in the rear to get a new external one. Though now I'm more leery of doing it, because when that one locks up, it'll cost me again. I only hope that there is a way that I can recover the data without it costing a small fortune, as I'm disabled and on a fixed income.
I have put in a "ticket" to find out what is wrong with mine... but then found this and other forums along the same line of "what happened? I didn't do anything, but it's not working suddenly!". So, I can see that I will have to call tech support, or go through what ever channels I need to in order to get the "okay" to crack my case and get the information off it, then get it replaced. ![]()
You weren't sure what as wrong with your unit... if it's the same thing that is what happened to mine, it's not your fault.
If it's the thing that I've been reading about, it's a problem Seagate knew about but don't really care about. The units lock up for no reason, the firmware being bad and needing updating as soon as you get the unit. Though I also read that that isn't a guarantee it will work, just that you have a better chance it won't happen to you.
Best thing to do... get the "ok" to crack the case and recover the data.
Then get it sent in and replaced. Then as soon as you do, make sure your firmware is as up to date as possible, because your replacement unit won't have the updated firmware either (so I read at least). Then finally, send up a prayer to what ever God you follow that it doesn't happen to you again. Looks like that is what I'm going to have to do... And I really needed some of the information I had on mine today. Talk about a kick in the gut!
Good luck!

Tiea Aeon,
Unfortunately, I too am in the same boat as you...disabled and on a fixed income...so therefore I cannot afford to pay exhorbitant prices for data recovery. My real concern is that some of those files are vital on that drive. My daughter was diagnosed in June with Stage 4 cancer and I have been handling all her paperwork for her. Now I can't access any of those files!! Let alone all my own files (financial info, photos, documents, etc.).
But what aggravates and infuriates me even more is that I went and had my brother go with me when purchasing this drive to make sure I was getting the "best one out there" to do what I needed...only to find out 6-7 months later that it is faulty and the manufacturer knew of this and didn't inform the buyer or even recall it! In fact they are still denying that there's a real problem with this drive!!!!
Calling Tech Support only gets more frustrating since they won't discuss anything with me because I'm past the phone support portion of my warranty according to them and must use email or live chat. Live chat only worsens the situation as they just insist on giving you wild goose chase links to go to that don't solve anything either. Returning the unit will only mean all my data will be lost forever!!
End result: I am now left trying to figure out how to come up with money I don't have to begin with to try to pay for data recovery that may or may not work on a faulty drive that the manufacturer should have recalled in the first place!! Worst of all is that no one has answered my initial question: What does it mean when the unit has a constant flashing white light?? Is data recovery even remotely possible now?
I have always used WD or Quantum drives in the past, but allowed myself to be swayed to purchase this one because of the size of it and because I did know the Seagate name. That will NEVER happen again!!
Tiea_Aeon wrote:Best thing to do... get the "ok" to crack the case and recover the data.
How do you go about "cracking the case" to recover the data? Is this the only way to recover the data? And can anyone tell me what costs may be involved in recovering my data that obviously Seagate won't help with in spite of them knowing these drives were defective to begin with?
Thanks for any help you can supply...

hi,
please read some article here http://www.gotbackdata.com/article.html these may help you.
and you want to recovery files must be out of warranty. you can check with following simple way:
1, power up hard drive and feel it spin up or no
2, it may have firmware problem or head going to crash if drive is spin up
