Having Trouble Setting Your FA Up Open Me

NOT CONNECTING OR NOT WORKING BETWEEN O/S ON DIFFERENT PC'S

If you are having flashing drives, try plugging in both usb ends and then the drive end of the cable.

When using it with XP for the first time be patient, it maybe your PC isn't fast enough to instantly register the drive active, if no joy after ten minutes try using other USB ports on the PC.

HOW TO USE BACK UP FUNCTION'S

Simple back up, select Simple back up and give the plan a name and then select ON, edit the times, View/delete older back ups or restore, open the Personal folder which contains everything on your PC and tick what you want backed up and untick those you don't, then next select the type of file you want backed up  then let it do the rest at the scheduled time, or back up now.

Custom back up, this is the best option imo, simply select Custom back up and then select the folders you want backed up, then the type of file within it then schedule the time and days for it to happen and hit finish.

Getting it back later

Restore a back up option, restore the most recent one or one say 5 back ups ago, if you want to delete any, simply right click and delete any unlocked files once Manager opens the window for you to view.

HOW TO USE THE ENCRYPTION FUNCTION IF YOUR DRIVE WAS SUPPLIED WITH IT

To use the encryption system follow these steps.

1 Install Seagate Manager supported version, so if you only have 3 tab's in the program once installed yours isn't the correct version, to get the correct version where 4 tab's will be available you must call customer services with your model and serial number, if your country qualifies a download spot will be opened up for you.

2 So, we have the correct version running now and these are the steps.

3 Click Security/Encryption button and make an encrypted folder and give it a password.

4 The encryption window should now be open and whatever file/folder you want to encrypt drag it into the window.

5 Once completed the file/folder still remains visible on your PC.

6 Even when you close and re-open the file is visible to you but only on this PC which is marked as authorised.

7 Options in Seagate Manager are to open/delete the encryption folder, or change password.

8 In My Computer you will open the FA and it will show the contents of the drive but you won't see the encrypted folder unless you are on the PC you made it on and have opened Manager and selected Open in the Security tab

9 Open the Encryption Tool folder on the FA if you are on a different PC and double click MaxtorEncryption.exe folder, this launches the window to insert your password, then the window opens with the encrypted files, dragging them back to desktop decrypts them for you.

10 If you are using more than one PC and get rapid flashes when hooking into an old PC with XP plug both usb ends of the cable in and then insert the drive end of the cable.

Hope this helps explain how to use encryption on a freeagent drive in layman's terms rather than a trawl through the manual, kudos button is to your left :->

HOW TO USE SYNC FUNCTION

This I believe simply replaces existing back ups with altered versions of the already backed up folders, so if you had a CD with 5 tracks on it backed up and you then added 5 more to the folder on your PC the FA will when scheduled to do so replace the 5 track folder with the 10 track on providing the folder is still named the same and in the same location on your HDD.

Hopefully you are up and running now, please don't ask me why it's not working if you've dropped it or it's come to grief some other way.

The answer I can give then is simply break it open and hook it up as a bare drive if trying another cable hasn't worked and hope you broke either the connector or bridge board.

Not recognised is normally broken/cable/usb port or a combo of all, but be sure to use both ends of the cable at the same time and sometimes just leaving it plugged in will get it recognised as long as it's not flashind, slow pulse means you have power and the drive shouldn't be damaged and it's normally a config or cable issue. HTH.
