Horizontal or vertical?

Is it possible to use the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Drive 2TB in a horizontal position. The blurb on the website here says the following:

"Offers vertical or horizontal orientation to fit in any desktop environment"

 

Do I merely lay it on it's side?  Is there anything I should do like detach or reattach the base or something, or is it that simple?

Your question is very valid.

Yes, you simply leave the drive upright or place it on its side. There is nothing additional that needs to be done.
