How to back-up external hard drive on Seagate Free Agent

I have a new external drive Seagate Free Agent Model No. ST305004FDA1E1-RK. All that came with it is a pamphlet called "this won't take long" for connecting it. I understood that this drive would automatically back-up my hard drive. How do I accomplish this? I can copy my photos and documents to it but not my applications/system/etc. If I try to copy an application to it, I get the message "Windows cannot create a shortcut here". I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.

Re: How to back-up external hard drive on Seagate Free Agent

You should have software that came with the HD ?  If not, its on the HD itself, somewhere.
You tell the software backup program what folders you want to backup.  The software supplied mostly backups the My Documents folder, and from what I read on the forums, only specific folders are allowed.
Click the + sign on any folder or drive to expand it and you have the ability only choose certain folders.
You give the backup a name and it copies those files to the Seagate drive.
You should ONLY make backup copies and not let them be the only copy on the Seagate.
You can set the software to backup at a certain time (the PC has to be on at that time) or manually do a backup.
If you install the software an icon should be on the bottom right of your PC.  You should be able to right click and start a backup from that icon.
Once you do the first backup, it will check and only copy the newer files on the Seagate.
So the first backup can take an hour or so, depending on how many files you have.
If you have ITunes, check the FAQ.
To backup your E-mail, check the FAQ section.  This software, for some reason, doesn't backup most E-mail programs.
If you use Web Mail (AOL, Google, Yahoo) then it doesn't matter, the files are on their servers.

Thanks you so much for your help! The software wasn't included so I probably need to download it somewhere. Any suggestions?

I did find and was able to download the back-up software on Seagate's website. It works perfectly. Thank you so very much!

Re: How to back-up external hard drive on Seagate Free Agent

I have this scenario......

IBM ThinkServer running SBS 2008. I configured SBS to backup to Seagate Freeagent external HDD on site. I need to do an offsite backup of the content of the external HDD to a tape drive, how do I go about this?

Any help will please.

Re: How to back-up external hard drive on Seagate Free Agent

My seagate backup works fine except for 2 major issues:

1. it does not want to back up my google drive. I have put all my most important files in the google drive which is a part of my D:/ drive. When I select the D:/ drive for back up on seagate, it backs up all other files and folders in D:/ except for the Google drive folder.  But as those are the most important files I need that backed up.  Is there a way to set this?

2. Frequently, for some reason, after unplugging and replugging, it restarts the backup from scratch as a completely new folder. So I now have 3 versions of backup of my hard drives on the seagate drive. Any idea why it does this? it takes a full day or two to do it each time and is just wasting space unnecessarily in the drive.

thanks!
