I did it too – laptop power into FreeAgent

[ Edited ]

Yes, all it takes is a moment’s carelessness – I plugged my laptop’s power plug into my FreeAgent XTreme 1TB by mistake – and it’s dead.  Sure, it didn’t fit perfectly, but momentary contact was all it took.  I’m not worried about the data since I have another external enclosure to put the drive in and retrieve from.  My only question is whether the drive is salvageable, or worth salvaging if it is.  From what I’ve read there are no fuses to replace.  If, for example, the little red pc board could be ordered and the drive would work as a result I’d do it.  Can anybody give me advice on this?

Your drive probably has a shorted 12V TVS diode. If so, then the solution is to remove it.

Thank you so much fzabkar, sniping the 12V diode did the trick!
