My External drive won't work!

I use a windows vista x64 home premium operating system. The drive itself is a Seagate FreeAgent Go external hard drive, with a 640 GB memory capacity.

Now for the problem. When I plug in my hard drive, "My Computer" automatically freezes up. It won't respond unless I pull out my drive. When I checked device manager, it said that the device was working properly, and that it was up to date. I know that I can run other external hard drives, because I borrowed my friend's and it works just fine. So I would like to think that the problem comes from my drive itself. I have tried reinstalling the driver, as well as disabling/enabling it. Both have not worked. When I used my brother's XP to check if it would work, his computer did not seem to recognize the drive. Also, when I pull my external hard drive, it says that I need to format my hard drive. Everything on my hard drive is replaceable, although it would be helpful if someone could give me a fix that would let me keep all my information.

So, all in all, I need a way for my to use my external hard drive again. I can't access it in any way that I've tried, so help would be appreciated. If the only thing to do it format the disk, I would gratefully accept and suggestions on how to do so. Remember, I can format my drive. I would just preferably not.

Thank you. God Bless.

Re: My External drive won't work!

1) Tried all the different USB ports on the computer?

2) What if you erase the drive with DiscWizard, and then try again to format it in Disk Management?

Re: My External drive won't work!

I have the same problem with my Freeagent GO.  I know it's the drive because I have been using it on 2 different computers and it happens on both.  My laptop runs Vista 64 bit and my desktop runs XP Pro.  It was working this morning on the desktop.  I got an I/O error at one point when trying to open up a folder.  When I safely removed it from the desktop and moved it to the laptop, it completely froze.  When I try to access "My Computer", everything stops working and everything on the desktop disappears.  After about 5 minutes, I was able to safely remove it.  I moved it back to the desktop and the same thing happened with the computer freezing and desktop disappearing.

I cannot reformat this drive and lose what I have on it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: My External drive won't work!

I've tried all the USB ports on 2 different computers and also tried different USB cables.

I can't erase the drive.  I need the data.

My disk did finally show up, but only after a long time waiting and only as a local disk with nothing on it.

Re: My External drive won't work!

When I use the seagate disc wizard, and it is analyzing my partition, it says "Failed to read from sector 400,773,620 of the hard disk 2." When I "ignore all" to these types of problems, it says "Failed to read from sector 63 of the hard disc 2." Then nothing happens. It looks as if it has finished analyzing my partition, but it does not show on my list of partitions. Using other USB slots doesn't help, and I've tried using this hard drive on multiple computers to no avail. Any additional help?

Re: My External drive won't work!

When I go to the disk in disk manager, it does not come out near my C drive, but I can see it on the lower portion, where it says "Disk 1, Unknown, 596.17 GB, and Not initialized." I have tried quick formats in NTFS and FAT, and both didn't work. I also tried a normal format in NTFS, and this ended up taking 7 hours, but it ended up not working as well. Now that I can see my drive, is there any way so that I can start making it work? The drive still doesn't come out in my computer, although I can see it in device manager. When I right click - properties on my drive in device manager, and go to the volumes tab, it says Disk : Disk 1, Type : Unknown, Status : Not Initialized, Partition style : Not applicable, Capacity : 610480 MB, Unallocated Space : 610480 MB, Reserved Space : 0 MB. When I go to the general tab, it says that the device is working properly, which is not. Also, when I try to initialize my external hard drive (although I'm not exactly sure what that does) in MBR, it says that it could not be completed because of an I/O device error.

**Update**
Now my computer and disk management both freeze when I open them with my external hard drive plugged in... I don't know what the problem is.

Re: My External drive won't work!

I used R-studio and scanned my external hard drive, and the only thing file that is found is a folder named "ROOT." There is nothing inside the folder, which I believe might have something to do with the problem. Any fixes? Or is this completely irrelevant to the topic at hand.

Re: My External drive won't work!

hi,

you try to scan it with MHDD. http://www.gotbackdata.com/article-diagnostic.html i think it may  have many bad block even got weak head. you can try DM also if you don't have data in it. DM will repartition all. note: all data will lose.
