Physically damaged drive

I tipped my drive over (FreeAngent) with my foot and it now makes a terrible racket. It shouldn't have been that much of a shock as it was on carpet and just tipped over however it was running when it happened.Needless to say I unplugged it as soon as possible. I chatted on line with support and they were talking about a minumum $1700. Since I am a student and can't even think about that, is there any way I can open this to see if I can straight itout? I really have nothing to lose if it doesn't work.

Re: Physically damaged drive

Does it have an internal fan ?   I don't think any of these do.  Yes, there are many people that opened these up (check YouTube.com) and removed the drive when the USB to HD adaptor dies or the AC adaptor plug breaks, etc, etc.
I can't see how just tipping it over would make the HD go bad, but you never know.  Usually it's just a zig.
If the plate is hitting the head... it's toast.  I can only thing of an internal fan getting out of alignment and make a racket.
The screws are hidden under all sorts of lables or some just snap together.
They make it difficult to disassemble.  Plus they may have those anti-removal torque bolts that require special tips.

Thanks for your help. I was thinking along similar lines. I just kind of feels if it could be pretty easily fixed if I can get into it.

Re: Physically damaged drive

You stated a terrible racket... a HD usually just make a bad humming sound or the click, click, click of death as the servo head tries to find Block 0.
If it's the servo head smacking around... toast.  Time for the pro's and many $$$$$
