Please help very confused

Hello I have this ST305004FDA1E1-RK 500G External drive. I do not want to use it as a backup to my internal drives but just as a storage device unto itself. Can I/Should I delete the software that comes with it? How do I get it to be used just like an internal drive in my WIN XP Pro without the added software and backup utility. I want to use it to store my music/movies so i can delete them from my internal drives. Do i have to erase and format the external drive? Please Reply. Thanks.

Just use it, now.  Don't worry about the software, just leave it alone.  Don't reformat it, just use it.

And I wouldn't do what you're planning to do.  An external drive is more likely to fail than an internal drive because it's more likely to be bumped, dropped, knocked over, etc.  If this drive fails and all your data is in that one place, you're in trouble.  It will cost a LOT to get it back.  Make sure your data is on two different storage media.  Internal drive, a 2nd external drive, CD, DVD, whatever.
