Problem accessing data through Win 7

I have a new computer with win 7 professional .

It sees the Free agent desktop external drive , gives it a letter but wants  it to be formatted before it can be read .
What can be done as I don't want to lose the material on the drive .

The drive works just fine on my old XP system

Re: Problem accessing data through Win 7

1) Try this.

2) If that doesn't work, take it back to the XP machine.  Back up the data to two different storage media.  (So for a time you'll have three different copies of your data, but you're going to erase the external drive in the next step, and you always need at minimum two copies, which equals one backup.)

3) Take the drive to the Win7 machine and reformat it.

4) Then copy the data back onto it.  It should work fine now.

Give a hoot. Backup your data on a second storage media.
