Hi I just bought a Seagate 500gb external HD USB 2.0 and was about to copy a load of files to it BUT the drive is 'Read Only', I'm using a Mac G4 running OSX 10.3.9, until I get the cash to buy that Macbook Pro I'm after but that's a different story. So does anyone know how to enable Read AND Write priviliges on the drive? As obviously it is useless if I can't write to it. I've had a look through the Knowledge Base but can't find any other examples of this. Maybe I just need to return it to the shop I bought it from? Thanks in advance if you've got any ideas! Ed

I too have the same issue. I have a 320gb drive. When I check the properties of the folder it says read only. I uncheck it but it remains read only for when I try to delete the folder it does not allow me to. It too seems to be write protected. Sorry to jump your thread but I have the same issue.

i ALSO have the same problem. it worked perfectly when i had my pc, and i backed up the whole drive. then when i transferred it all to my mac (leopard), it worked perfectly again! but then, when i tried to start writing on it again and backing up my new computer, i get the same dumb message as you. do you think restoring it would fix the problem? you'd probably lose all of your information, but you might be able to just back it up again if you could get it to write. i'll try it and let you know.

I also have exactly the same problem. If you guys find any way of changing this stupid problem please write a message on this board. This **bleep** hard drive is driving me crazy!

i have a mac, and i had to use the utility that dealt with disk drives. unfortunately i had to completely erase everything on the drive, but when it erased it all and restored it i had full privileges to both read and write on it. i actually found instructions for doing so on seagate's website; it was fairly easy and quick to do. the only downside was that i did lose everything currently on it.

I was able to delete files from my drive once I reformatted it with NTFS. My issue was in Windows XP Pro SP2

I had the same problem with my FreeAgent 500 GB when i tried to use the drive with my roommate's MAC. 

I am able to write files onto the drive with my PC, but not from another computer. 

I can't find anything in the drive's properties on my PC that even mentions that it is "read-only".

Is there any way to ameliorate this problem without wiping everything off the drive?

I wanted to chime in and say that I too am experiencing a similar problem. I bought a 250GB seagate freeagent external hard drive P/N: 9NK2AE-500. I use the drive too boot linux on my laptop and the drive is formatted with the ext3 filesystem. The reason why I bought the drive in the first place is so I could setup a simple fileserver for my coworkers, and then come home at the end of the day and have my windows OS untainted, but this drive is useless for this purpose. I am able to boot fine and it will run perfectly for a couple of hours, but then inexplicably the drive will stop working until I reboot. If I try to do anything on the drive after it stops working I get the error that the drive has a read-only filesystem. Twice now the drive has decided to stop working in mid operation causing me to have to run fsck after reboot to restore the filesystem consistancy. I have troubleshot this issue to the best of my abilities and I belive the problem to be something to do with either the drive electronics or possibly the laptop USB controler. Maybe there is a timeout for keeping the drive on/active?

I too have the same problem- I can write if I'm using a PC, but only read from a mac. I've backed everything up, and I can wipe if I need to, but would that even solve the problem?

that was the same problem i had when i switched it over to my mac.  if you reformat it using your mac's utility application you will solve the problem.  worked for me anyway.
