Seagate 1tb External Hard Drive - Blinking light to no light :(

I have a Seagate 1tb external hard drive.

It was working fine and then one day it started the 'blinking green light'. Then it stopped doing that and now does nothing! While the blinking light was going the hard drive didnt seem to be running. I could hear no spinning etc.

No sure what i am meant to do now? Obv can't run chkdsk as nothing will show and nowthere is no life at all!

It is in warranty so should i take it back to where i bought it or send it into Seagate? Also i need the date so if i do remove the harddrive and connect to my PC as a slave, will i void the warranty? ARGHHHH help!

Can you hear the drive trying to spin up? Any vibration? Did you drop it? Did you overvolt it with the wrong adapter?

If your data are more valuable than your warranty, then you will need to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to your motherboard. You may want to ask Seagate Tech Support for their OK before you do, though.

If you decide to exercise your warranty, then it would be better to return your drive to your place of purchase. The replacement drive will be a new one.

If, OTOH, you return your drive to Seagate, you will pay for shipping, and the replacement drive may be refurbished.

Thanks for your reply. I can't hear it spinning at all, no action apart from the blinking green light. All i can think is that my flat mate inserted the incorrect AC adapter into it, the one for the printer. I believe the printer AC adapter is 0.95A and the Seagate takes 0.65A. I am not 100% sure of this but it would explain why all motion has cut out.

Like you say it leaves me in a difficult predicament as i have to weigh up my personal data over the value of a new hard drive (warranty)...

It's not the amps that matter, it's the volts, and the polarity. In any case the Seagate adapter is probably a 12V 2A unit, with centre pin positive.

can it still be fixed and data saved if this happened?

alyssa46, hopefully the damage was limited to a TVS protection diode, in which case there is a very good chance that the drive can be saved with an easy, no-cost DIY fix. However, you will need to open the case, remove the board from the drive, and upload a detailed photo of the component side to a file sharing service.
