I bought the 1 TB external freeagent desk drive a month ago, at first it was fine till about a week, then it started with clicking noises, sounding constantly like it is shutting down and powering up. Sometimes it does not even detect. I then plugged it into my friends pc which had xp on and it worked fine... then plugged it back into mine which has vista 64... then the clicking goes on. I tried everything installed all kinds of stuff but nothing works.. tried vista 32.. same problem. What can cause this why is it clicking and is there a way to fix this... Please anyone, help will be greatly appreciated.

I asked a similar question by opening a Case to Seagate Support. And was told to run SeaTools for Windows. If any of the tests fail (in your case, when the drive is connecting to Vista), replace the drive on warranty.
I found that Short Generic Test was the quickest and most effective.
In your case, it would be REALLY interesting to run that same test on both a Vista and XP machine and compare the results.

Thank you for your reply, i did run the test on both vista and xp both times the test showed no errors. On vista during the test it was clicking but it says nothing is wrong. It not only sounds bad but it hampers the performance too. Does not read / write. This is a really big flaw or something in seagates, because i have seen alot of topics about this clicking issue. I did some research and found this out too bad i only did the research after i bought it. Wish i knew this before i bought it. Seagate should really look into this problem.
THanks for your reply once again.

i bought 6 of the Expansion Seagate 1.5T and one 2T Freeagent. The first 5 of 6 already makes the clicking noise after 1 yr of use - so they aren't cover by warranty. Does Seagate have any countermeasure to this problem? Why all these drives are so un-reliable? This is the quality issue with these hard drive.

Mine started making clicking noise, did it for about 2weeks & then stopped. I didn't get an answer from Seagate when I submitted problem. Now it seems to work other than i368 box keeps popping up & then drive opens & I have to close. Sent this to Seagate & haven't heard anything either.

The problem is simple, the screw washer on the capacitor side is touching and creates some kind of short on the pcb board. The connect bracket with the harddrive may also touch the metal case. Two things to fix the problem, replace the screw washer with non metal washer or put insulation tape around the capacitor. You have to put a insulation tape, like duct tape on the metal case underneath the connection bracket . I have done it and the seagate is working great without any constant clicking noise for a week now. It's one of those problem that's hard to trouble shoot because it works fine when it's out of the case. I hope this will help people with 1T or 2T external Seagate hard drive and get it fix themselves. You all have a great day.

Hi everyone, I am back because the clicking noise comes back after a month, so I took it apart again. I connect outside the case and make a tight good connection, the clicking noise stops. I put it back the way it is without disconnect it and mount the pcb back with the screws just tight. Everything is fine and no clicking noise after it put back in the case. I guess my previous reasons is not correct, it looks like the pcb board and the harddrive needs a tight fit and I assume the pcb board mounted position does not allow it to tight fit when the harddrive push in. I will keep everyone post and see it the clicking noise goes away for good. You all have a good day.
