[Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB/Go] Blinking light, repeating buzz, computer do not detect drive.

Hi

I own the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB/Go external drive.

Info from the box:

Model Number: ST305004FDD1E1-RK

S/N: 9QM3EWK5

P/N: 9NF2DL-576

Info from below the disk:

500GB

P/N 9NK2AL-510

S/N 9QM3EWK5

It worked excellent since i bought it, but couple of days ago it stopped. It was like that: i used it in the evening without any problems, but the next day in the morning i've seen the popup "Unknown device connected" or something like that, so i reconnected the drive, and computer didn't detect it anymore...

After a while i realised that the light on the disk started to blink. and if i put an ear near the drive i hear a repeating buzz periodically but the buzz stops after a while(is it an effort to run?). What does it means that the light on the disk blinks?

I've read support forums/threads, but nothing helped. Neither connecting/reconnecting USB and POWER, nor changing USB ports, computers etc.

The worst thing is that i have about 400GB of data on the disk, and i can't even see it, but i extremely like to have  them back - their important for me.

I'd like to try to do that at home, and maybe finally later try the warranty...

Can you give me any advices?? I could even take it to pieces, and try to solve it on my own, but i need advices. Please help me or show me similar (solved) threads on the forums.

Greetings FiTzu

Re: [Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB/Go] Blinking light, repeating buzz, computer do not detect driv

I've taken it to pieces. The disk name is Barracuda 7200.11 500GB

S/N 9QM3EWK5

ST3500820AS

P/N 9BX134-568

Firmware SD81

Data Code: 08406

Site Code: KRATSG

WWN: 5000C5000CC66E31

What means that warranty is void if the drive experiences shock in excess of 300Gs??

So. I've tried to plug it with SATA Power and Data Cable, and still got no response.

No light is blinking anymore, because i've unplugged them. But i still hear the buzz.

Can realy noone help me??

Hello FiTzu,

Still have the same exact problem with my FreeAgent Desktop, indeed after tearing it apart, results in a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Drive.

The buzz sound is like this?

I hope someone can help us!

A friend of mine tried to change the power supply and mechanism, and few other things. Nothing helped. He told me to try to use a warranty, but i have to say "bye bye" to the data stored...

Re: [Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB/Go] Blinking light, repeating buzz, computer do not detect driv

I also have the 1.5TB version of the FreeAgent Desk, and also have the repeating buzz and blinking light.  This is the second drive in a row that started doing this; the first lasted just under a month, and the second about a week.  Neither was dropped or jarred in any way, and both were sitting there working happily one minute, and the next minute, the drive could no longer be accessed.

For a drive that supposedly has a failure rate of under 1% in the first year (I think I saw that statistic somewhere in the Seagate specs), this is getting a little ridiculous.  I didn't have backups of the stuff on either drive because I had nothing else big enough to back it up to, and was planning to get the first drive replaced under warranty and use the replacement to back up the second.  But the second died long before I could receive the replacement for the first.

So, I guess the question of the hour is, does Seagate make any fairly large external USB 2.0 drives that are actually reliable?
