Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

[ Edited ]

at wit's end now. chkdsk /f can't work anymore. tried Partition Table Doctor to rebuilt table, fix mbr, fixboot... etc. still not working. maybe have to do a surface test (long process) before a sleep and let it run.

seagate manager disk test says to return it.

so i might be getting a lemon. this is so wrong of seagate eventhrough they'll do a 1to1.  i lost all my data for trusting seagate??!! and all i got is hours wasted and a round trip to the reseller plus a new disk which i dun think i'll trust anymore.

....words can't express what i feel right now. really disappointed with seagate product. think the policy should be for every disk damage due to manufacturer's fault that's return, we should at least get back the next bigger capacity. i lost all by data for crying out loud!

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

We generally buy external hard drives to backup data.

This means the drive needs to be reliable.

Failing after a month is not reliable and judging from this forum and other sources on the internet my experience isn't unusual.

Just wish I'd researched the product better before wasting my time and money on it.

Don't think I'll even bother returning the product as I wouldn't trust the replacement.

My 1st and last Seagate product.

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

i agreed. reliablity is a must. to wrap up this saga, i'll briefly tell my story.

since chkdsk /f can't work anymore, and i'd basically given up hope to make it readable anymore. So i tried to at least recover my data thru some data recovery software. during the scan, these some bad sector found. then the program hanged. i even left it running overnite.

one last attempt. i tried to boot into XP recovery console. chkdsk no luck. but i managed to fixboot. run fixmbr but nothing happened. but now i can rebuilt the folder tree list using the software. all the files are visible. next is the tedious and time consuming step to copy each & every file out.

i just logged in & printed a return order form. i'll dump this thing back to them & get a new drive..... hopefully i can find a buyer & get the cash to buy something more reliable.

let me know if you are in the same situation as me & hopefully i can help squeeze whatever data u got trapped in this silly little box.

Godspeed to all of you.

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

Decided to return my 'seagate freeagent go' to retailer after it failed after just over a month.

Insisted on a refund as an unreliable drive is almost worthless to me.

I quoted The Sales of Goods Act etc. and the retailer has given me a full refund.

Now I can use the money to buy a hard drive I can trust to put my data on and put this bad experience behind me.

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

Hi, Just joined tonight and I too am another of what appears to be a legion of unhappy customers, I have just submitted a Case to Support (not holding my breath from what others have posted in this thread and others concerning the issues with these devices. Crossing fingers that I can get it resolved, I just moved many personal files and some work ones over to a Freeagent Desk 1TB that was purchased 27/02/09 from local Dick Smith dealer it hasn't been moved from the place it was initally powered up nor knocked or misused, now my 4 computers can't see this drive in My Computer. I can understand hardware failure I am assistant manager of an ISP here in NSW Australia and prior to this I was a Seagate fan but if there is no decent support I will be raising heck about this, our company spends thousands of dollars on HDD hardware and I'll just purchase WD in future. I have seen little in way of decent replies from manufactuer in these forums, I know it's a Community Forum not a Support forum but when a large chunk of the threads are devoted to similar issues about the equipment and lack of support surely you could provide a more helpful trend. I will post when I (and if) I hear back from them. Good luck to all those with simlar problems.

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

This is the second time this has happened on my Freeagent 500gb drive.

You can get all your data back by using GetDataBack for NTFS

But it will take about 7 hours :-(

I have the program working on the drive again right now.

You can see an image of the recovery software in action here

I just now took the image

http://i40.tinypic.com/sosin9.jpg

Because of the unreliability of the drive I now only use it to

record HuffyYUV video files captured by my PVR card.

I'm recovering some movies I recorded from TCM a few days ago.

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

I have used EASUS DATA RECOVERY SUITE 2.0 with a lot of success, and i recovered data even after formatting the drive with random numbers with a 35 wipe pass, where it formats it 35 times. The program called BCWipe and another one that erases a special area of the disk used for storing file directories, froze and i couldnt even use my drive. NOT ONLY did -EASUS Data Recoery Suite 2.0- recover files i thought were erased, it also has a tool called Partiion Table Doctor that is the most advanced program id ever seen. With about 5 minutes, a single click , and a restart i had my hard drive working again. Just let the program run when recovering files and it will find the files. Also play around with PartitionTableDoctor, and see if you can fix your problems guys.

Re: Seagate Freeagent USB Drive Detecting but unknown in disk manager.

Oh Thank Heaven (this is NOT a commercial for 7-11)...:smileytongue:

I really hate it when I have a computer problem and need a solution and go to Google it only to find out that my problem is not as rare as I thought it was but instead of finding a solution, I find 23 dozen other 'I had the same issue' posts.... This is NOT one of those... well it is, but, WITH A TWIST!

I searched and searched and searched on drivers for my FreeAgent GO 500GB and 250GB USB drives.  Couldn't find them anywhere... For reasons I can't really go into, I don't have 'you can go anywhere you want online' access... so not getting the 'You Cannot Go To This Site' message is a task all by itself...

After doing everything but dancing the jig, I found out, quite by accident, how to fix this isse... And, now that I know how, it's REALLY simple....

Right Mouse Click = MY COMPUTER

Click 'Manage'

Under 'Storage' Click 'Disk Management'

With your drive (obviously) plugged in, find your drive.

Assign it a drive letter and Seagate Manager will now show you the drive, it's capacity and usage, and you'll be able to get to the drive from 'Explorer'...

Good luck - and, you're welcome!
