Seagate Freeagent beeping and undetected

I have a Seagate Freeagent desktop external hard drive and the other day it was working fine. When I plugged it into the usb port this morning it just kept making a low beeping noise and my laptop will not detect it. I have seen other posts in the forum about this issue but none seem to have a definte answer. Can someone please give me some direction on this problem?

Re: Seagate Freeagent beeping and undetected

I am having the same issue. I have had my external for 3 weeks and it just stopped being recognized. I talked to a seagate representative earlier today and they seem to think my hard drive has failed. I literally just found out it was beeping a minute before finding this post so I did not have an opportunity to ask about the beep. However, signed point to a failed hard drive and according to the seagate data recovery rep, it can cost upwards of $1500 to recover.

Re: Seagate Freeagent beeping and undetected

Are any of you using a PC or are you all laptop user's?

If you are laptop user's, try this, fully charge your battery, and then keep the lead in the laptop and then connect the external, these drives rely on outside power, if power gets unstable or not enough of it, the drive will play up, just a simple check to eliminate the silly things 1st.

Re: Seagate Freeagent beeping and undetected

Have you tried switching out the USB/Dual FireWire module on the bottom of the drive?  I have a 1 TB FreeAgent drive that my computer stopped recognizing.  I tried switching cables and USB ports, but nothing worked (I have a second, newer 1TB Seagate FreeAgent drive).  I had the Dual FireWire module installed and switched it out for the USB module.  Now my drive works fine, but I need to get a replacement module for the Dual FireWire (Part #100452909) and am not having any luck finding one so far.  If anyone has one they aren't using, please let me know.  Also, Seagate Customer Service, if you are reading this, please contact me about that part.

Re: Seagate Freeagent beeping and undetected

If your drive is making a sound like this one:

(note this isn't my drive but exactly the sound it was making)
This turned out to be a complete mechanical failure of the drive, I needed the data so had to send it in for recovery....

Re: Seagate Freeagent beeping and undetected

I'm using a MAC, operating system: OS X.

I have tried plugging in my external hard drive with the computer power source still plugged in.

It isn't being recognized on my computer, and only makes this muted quick beeping sound (sort of like a truck backing up.)

I've never dropped my Seagate FreeAgent, or had any damage done to it, so I know that this is a not a mechanical problem that I have caused. I've read that it is commonly a power issue? If this is true, what cable/upgrade cable woudl I need to get for it to run again? I currently have the one it came with, a 2.0 USB.

Please reply back ASAP. I need to know what to do.
