Seagate...NFI

[ Edited ]
Why is that the packaging of Seagate FreeAgent CLEARLY STATES...works with Windows Professional 2000 and yet it does not. If you go to their crappy website and download the software for the FreeAgent, when loaded it comes up as to be used for XP or Vista only and refuses to install. Further information on this site has an actual employee suggesting a work around. Well stuff me..if you want us to work like that, why not print on the box..."works with Win'98" Anyone can drag files across.....

Any excuse after this is just another attempt to justify their position that we can sell any **bleep** we like and get away with it. It's just corporate bull.

Re: Seagate...NFI

Well, what did I expect?   ...A response would have been nice.

Does anyone understand what the situation is here. I spent an hour of my time looking at all the external hard drives and made sure that I bought a drive that was compatable with my OS as I will be running it between two computers. I asked the shop assistant all the right question and debated the issues to make sure it will work with Xp Pro & 2000 Pro. The box clearly states it works with 2000 Pro. This is the sole reason on why I chose the FreeAgent 250gb. I debated the idea that it must work with 2000 Pro as Seagate had it printed on the box....the other drives clearly stated XP Pro & Vista ONLY. This is the claim that pushed me towards the FreeAgent. It clearly states that it works with 2000 Pro. It does not. It is an absolute lie, it is false advertising.

I could have bought a Western Digital 320gb for the same price!!!

Re: Seagate...NFI

Hi,

The original release of the FreeAgent Desktop drive in the US did not come with any software. The drive itself, however, works just fine in Windows 2000 Professional. Later in the product's life, software was added to the product package, so the new drives that contain the software are labeled on the box as "including software" but don't include Windows 2000 Pro among the supported operating systems on the box.

The software was also uploaded to the Seagate public website so that Windows Vista and XP customers that had the older FreeAgent Desktop drive could benefit from the additional software.

On a side note, the FreeAgent Pro drive has premium backup software in the box and works with Windows 2000, XP and Vista. The premium software requires a key and is not available for download as that is part of the value in the price differential between the FreeAgent Pro and FreeAgent Desktop drives.
