Seagate free agent Desktop wakes up by itself !

[ Edited ]

I have a problem with my Freeagent Desktop 750GB, I set in Drive Manager, Power settings for let say 15min

of work and after that it spouse to go in power saving mode “Sleep” and it does, but not for long, it wakes up by itself, it can happen after 5min or after 30 but it happening and it’s wary annoying,

I noticed it happening usually after deleting something (some file) on my primary internal drive.

.

What can I do to put drive in to sleep and wake it up only when it needed?

Reset the option of automatic sync. The software probably detects that the files on the primary drive have changed and wants to sync with the backup drive, so it wakes up

There isn't any automatic sync, where did you found that option?

I've noticed this problem for years now, with every external drive I've ever had. I'm often running 4 or more externals at the same time, and it can get pretty annoying when all of the drives suddenly decide to come out of hibernation, causing the computer to freeze up for a several seconds.

Just like you said, it's always triggered by certain actions, like emptying the recycle bin or opening certain programs (ones I happen to use a lot).

I've always meant to ask someone about it, but I can't really imagine what could be done to stop it. Like I said, this is common to all externals - most of which don't have any specific software to control them.

If anyone has a solution, I'm a few years overdue in wanting to get one.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Seagate free agent Desktop wakes up by itself !

I glad to hear that i not alone with the problem,
tech support have answered me, and it's funny to see:

It sounds like you did everything right by changing the power settings. Usually this issue accurs when you have a virus protection software that is constanlty scanning your system, including the external drive. One thing that you could try is disable your virus protection software from scanning the external drive
.

A virus protection? don't guess if you don't know the answer!

To me it sounds like something on your system is causing your drive to think it needs to be powered on.

I would run msconfig and on the Services tab I would hide all the Microsoft Services and stop all of them.  Then click startup and uncheck all of them and reboot.

If that fixes the issue an application on your system is causing the issues.  From there you need to track the application down and resolve the issue.

Don't forget after you finish your testing to turn everything back on

There is. "Utilities/Folder sync", check "Manual sync"
