Several Basic Questions about Backups

I just got a FreeAgent Desk 1TB drive and was able to install the updated drivers for Vista 64 and run the initial backup.  I pushed the daily backup to 11:00 pm to run it after we're all generally done for the evening.  Do I need to have a user logged ito their profile for the backup to run or is it preferable that no one be logged in (i.e. Outlook PST file is locked when Outlook is open)?  Also, does it matter if the PC is asleep or not?

I went through the community forum to look for this question and to get an idea of any issues to look out for - as well as finding the link to download the updated drivers for Vista 64.  I noted severl mentions of issues when the PC powers down and a really unusual technique of freezing and dropping the drive to get it to work.  Are there any precautionary measures I should be aware of and practice to ensure smooth backups?

Finally, I got a 1TB external drive for a 750GB internal drive.  The first backup is only about 90GB but this will grow over time as my wife wants to start storing video of her father telling as many stories as he can to save for the future and we are starting to scan old photos and the audio library will be growing.  With the incremental backups, is it likely that the external drive will start to fill up or is this very unlikely in this scenario?

thanks in advance for your assistance!

Re: Several Basic Questions about Backups

First : <<wife wants to start storing video of her father telling as many stories as he can>>

This is a backup device.. alway have two copies... never store your ONLY copy on one if these.

Will the software backup multiple profiles ?  The Maxtor software won't.  Only if you login under that name.

Not sure if you are getting anything on Outlook. Those files are hidden and again, if you can access another profile.
