Slow Transfer Speed when formatted as NTFS vs. FAT32

I'm using a new Seagate FreeAgent Go 1 TB external USB 2.0 drive. When connected to my Windows XP 32-bit laptop (NTFS file system), and when the external drive is formatted using NTFS, I can only transfer files to the drive at approximately 1 MB/sec. HOWEVER, when the external drive is formatted using FAT32, I can transfer files to the drive at approximately 4 MB/sec.

Ideas on how to fix this? FAT32 is not a good long-term solution, as file sizes are limited to 4 GB.

Thanks,

Justin
