Trouble with Deleting Files from my external hard drive -- files are gone but no space was freed up?

I recently backed up a whole bunch of files using Memeo LifeAgent onto my 500GB external HD from my MacBook Pro.  Soon after it completed I realized I had Time Machine on this MacBook and thought maybe I'd use that instead, especially as I want to back up my whole hard drive onto the FreeAgent drive.  In preparation to do that I wanted to free up space on the drive, so I dragged the Memeo folder from the external drive into Trash on my MacBook Pro.

My problem now is that while the files and folders I dragged out of the FreeAgent drive no longer show up, it says that the memory that those files had occupied is still taken up, leaving only about 150GB left (while it should be at least 300GB).  I can't find any trace of those files, but they seem to still be on the external hard drive -- is there any way to find them?  And if I haven't deleted them correctly, how do I properly delete files in the future (since I'm using it with a Mac)?

While you have the drive connected click on the external drive icon, then empty trash.

That worked for me with my MacBook and my Seagate FreeAgent Go external drive.

Ah!  I feel a bit dumb that I didn't figure that out myself... Thank you for the help!
