Using Windows Backup instead of Seagate Manager, is it ok?

I have a new FreeAgent Go 500GB.  So far I connected it but did not install the software.  I used Windows Backup (I have Win 7) and it worked fine with the FreeAgentGo being recognized as an external drive.  But I wonder if not using the Seagate software is leaving me open to issues.  For instance since I didn't install the software there is no tray icon for the drive.  Also the power save feature won't work.  Meaning the drive will stay fully powered all the time which doesn't seem like a good idea. Will I have to install the software for both features (icon and power save) to work?

Can I install the software and just not use it to backup?  Or should I use it to backup instead of Windows Backup? If so what do I do with the Windows Backup that I have set up?

Sure, you can use Windows Backup, absolutely.

No need to install the Manager, but you can install it and simply not use it for backup.

[ Edited ]

Thanks Alan.

I did install the software and said "no thanks" to the auto backup.  Then I noticed the sticky about 64bit software. Since I have Win 7 64 bit I spent some time chatting with Seagate and was given the software (2.1.600) to replace what I had (2.1.700).  But then I received an email from an earlier inquiry and was told the 2.01.700 was newer.

So which is the newest/correct software?  Seems like Seagate should have known.  I ended putting the 2.1.700 back on.

The first Windows Backup took 4 hours and used more space than my hard drive is using.  Related to the image copy or something I hope.

I used a Maxtor drive for years and it saved me when my computer died.  I just hope this Seagate works out as well.
