another dead in the water ST302504FDA1e1-RK desk top HD

[ Edited ]
O.K.- so now I know that I am not alone! I just purchased this Free Agent 250GB external HD & it is SOMETIMES recognized by my computer (win XP-Home,Pro/service pk 2).
I unplug it and start again- sometimes it recognizes the Free Agent drive & other times it doesn't. Sometimes it only sees it as an "unknown"
ANYBODY know what the heck I can do as I received NO SOFTWARE with it & according to the website I should download the software  (which I just did but have not executed the install yet...I'm not brave enough yet)
I have already had 1 instance of the dreaded BLUE SCREEN and subsequent hrs of trying to reset it back to the last known "good" operating condition.

PLEASE...I have been trying to record vhs-to-dvd video clips of my parents (for my siblings since our mother just passed away)...and I have already lost 2 weeks of taping & can't afford to lose what seems to be locked up in the free agent HD.
O.K.-I just installed the recommended software from the site (Free Agent-DT-WWzip) without any luck. The DRIVE MONITOR states I have no drives found. What's up with that???
Thanks,
kelswear

It sounds like you need to determine if this is a system issue or drive related. You should probably take it to another system and see if the detection issues follow the device.
Backup = Having data in more than one place.

He who laughs last ....... Probably had a backup

Thanks, my computer crashed & I am finishing backing up important docs-etc. I am then going to try & see if I can clean up my system & try to see if that works.
Thanks,
