dual USB connectors???

OK, I'm stupid. Fine. I bought a FreeAgent Go and didnt realize till I got home that it requires TWO USB connectors for a laptop. So here's the stupid question: does a tower (Mac G5 dual 2ghz) also need both plugs connected? And what happens if you only use one plug?

Re: dual USB connectors???

it might or might not require both cables, i've got one and it depends on the pc

i think a lot of the time it says it doesn't need both

or you can try a powered usb hub

Thanks Melonade. After I made that post, I found the live Chat help and posed the same question. You're right. If it doesnt have enough juice, I was told, it will beep at me. Then I need to use the second plug. But for my G5, I"m good for only one plug.

I was having worries, and they are still not completely at ease, that I was at risk of burning up a USB bus using just one cable. However, the live techie told me I"d be OK. I just hope these guys arent like the IRS when it comes to answering questions.

cheers,

Re: dual USB connectors???

Hi there

I want to buy a Seagate FreeAgent Go to run off my eeePC as portable storage.

The previous version of the Freeagent go had a split USB cable so that it was powered by one USB connector

and data transferred over the other. This is ideal for me but I can't find anywhere any information as to

whether the new version also has this. I don't want a docking station as I have too much to carry already and

am travelling for 15 months.

Also, does anyone know if the Freeagent Go is compatible with the eeePC and will run OK?

Thanks!

Re: dual USB connectors???

should be ok on the eeePC (whatever that is) as long as it has windows

thats not quite right about the dual connection - if the pc usb port provides enough juice over the one connector, it will also provide data.  usb can do both

I would also like to know if the new Freeagent Go's have a dual USB cable included. Does anyone know? (Can't find the info anywhere on this site).

Thanks in advance.

Re: dual USB connectors???

Yes, the FreeAgent GO does come with a dual USB cable.  Seagate does a very poor job documenting this.  No where do they indicate the need for two USB ports, not on the website, not on the package, not even in the little instruction sheet...... it shows a single USB.  Was this a surprise to them?

Anyone heard whether a 750gb is on the way?

Re: dual USB connectors???

500 GB is the biggest 2.5-inch (laptop-size) drive that anyone makes right now.  I think 750 GB is a little while away.  500 GB is cutting-edge huge right now.
