Hi, my hard drive (Seagate Desktop External Drive sn2GHK4M7Y) became read only after using it on windows 7. I copied some files and plug it back to machine with windows XP(that I use always) and I can't manage any files. Error is "Make sure disk is not full or write-protected and that file is not currently in use".
*file is not in use
*free space left 5%
* changing disk letter did not help
*cmd delete read only attribute didn't help

Access Denied Error or File/Folder Permission Issues on an External Drive
Does that help?

Are any other options or just format it ? Would that help ?

this may or may not solve this specific problem, but if the info i'm about to give had been in this thread, it would have saved me hours.. good luck
I didn't have to reboot or anything and it worked for me.
get an administrator CMD prompt
type "diskpart"
type "list volume"
type "select volume x" where x is the locked drive
type "attributes disk" - see if readonly
if true, type "attributes disk clear readonly"
type "attributes volume" - see if readonly
if true, type "attributes volume clear readonly"

What a hassle but I suppose all problems here are.
Pulled out Seagate external drive and same issue - can't delete from it or write to it. Tried all fixes I've seen on this thread. This has got to be a fairly common issue. Does anyone have any other ideas. Running XP. This drive worked fine last time I used it and now it's a no go. I don't want the data on the drive, I just want to delete data to make room for backup. Error message is "disk full or write protected"
Any other possible fix????
Thanks soo much

So that I can help you get this resolved, please share the drive's part or model number with me here as well as which - if any - software you're using. Thanks.
