new base module

Hey, I bought a freeagent pro a while ago and it recently fell off my desk causing the usb input for the drive to be destroyed. Other than that input, the drive is fine. Does anyone know where I could purchase a new base module thing for the drive?

Re: new base module

Hey oatsybob, did you ever get a response to this?  I have the same problem.  The module has it's own part number and it screws off and on, so they must have them somewhere in the repairs department.

Hi:

Thanks for your participation in the our forums so far. This is a question that I think only Customer Service can help you with.  Contact them either by phone, email, or chat.
Thanks.

Hey!
Recently, I had the same problem. My FreeAgent Desktop fell on the floor and the usb input got disconnected. After that, I contacted customer service but the following is the only answer I've got.

"With regards to your query for the board, we would request you to contact any of your local vendors or Computer outlets/Computer store for the same."

I did search for the part locally in vain. So I asked them again "where" I can get it, but the same answer again and again...

Did anyone find the part? Then please tell me where.

Thanks in advance..

Re: new base module

Taking Alan's advice, I did contact Customer Service and was told "With regards to your query, we would like to inform you that Seagate neither repairs drives nor does it undertake repairs of separate components/accessories. Please also note that in-warranty drives are exchanged and not repaired."

I realize that three customers doesn't exactly constitute a groundswell, but at the same time, it's no longer just an isolated incident. When you sell millions of units, you are always going to have a few parts fail. Why would you not offer to SELL replacements for those parts? Can you imagine Ford refusing to sell side mirrors and insisting that they have to exchange the entire vehicle (or nothing)?

Regardless. All I really want is to know is where I can get a replacement module, p/n 100453518. Doesn't even have to be new. Refurbished would be fine. Maybe off one of those exchanged drives...

PS I do give a hoot. That's why I bought a Seagate drive to back up my data on.

Re: new base module

I have the same issue as well, my USB connection recently just broke off - I use my Seagate to store external music, because I do dj gigs and I do have to disconnect a lot.  I find it odd as well that this piece, which does have a part number, is not sold or replaced.  I will be contacting customer service as well tomorrow, hopefully I will get further.

Re: new base module

Hello, I also bought my 500GB FreeAgent Pro about 2 months ago. It worked great until the usb input broke loose a couple days ago. I figured it'd be easy to reconnect so I tried soldering it and superglueing it (which both didn't work. Apparently after superglueing it, the computer recognized the usb connection, but had errors trying to read it).

If anyone finds out where to find a replacement, please let me know!!

Thanks,

Kris

Re: new base module

This is absolutely ridiculous!! I am also having this problem, only difference is that I am deployed in Iraq and I just took it for granted that since the piece is detachable with a seperate part number, there would be no problem ordering a new one. I have two of these 500GB externals, and both of them have the same problem with the usb just breaking off. I dont think one of them I bought even  had the usb plug attached to begin with. I have only had these units for about 2 months. I dont know if you guys know, but there is another thread addressing this same problem, with no results. I am going to attach their messages to the back of mine. I don't care what I have to do, I am pissed off about this after seeing how many people are having this problem. Seagate is going to have to address our concerns. The px here in Mosul Iraq sells tons of these units to soldiers and I wonder how many more are having problems with this. I am about to request that they stop selling this unit to soldiers due to poor customer service.

I found this thread labeled "bad usb port engineering"

I bought my FreeAgent Pro 500 GB about 2 weeks ago from compusa as they were selling out, but with no returns.  Today I pulled the unit out of the factory sealed box and when I tried plugging in the usb wire into the base, the connector just pushed back into the base like it was not even attached.  I pulled out the connector from the base and it is obvious that there was not any solder on the part.  The service department guy that answered the telephone told me that if it is damaged they will not take it back! What kind of warranty is that? All I want is a new part # 100453518, I'll even pay for one.  This $200 hard drive is useless without parts availability.  It looks like there is a growing number of people that need this part

i got the same problem and its been growing it seems..  if there is a part number, there is a way to get a replacement part.... the fact the company doesnt have an answer is REDICULOUS.. im deployed downrange... so its not like i have time or ability to find the part......

I have the same problem.  I bought this device 2 months ago because I was anticipating my deploment to Afghanistan and thought it would be a great way to store my movies overseas.  After spending countless hours uploading my DVDs I am now on deployment unable to use the device at all.  My time and money has been wasted.  The connecting piece on the usb port fell into the the hard drive and was floating loosely.  After diconnecting the piece from the drive I discovered that it looked as if the piece was never securely attatched.

Same problem here.  Talk about a frustrating situation.  I purchased this drive because of reviews.  Now that my pin is dancing all over the component, the drive is paper weight after just a few days post-purchase.  Here is something I'm going to try and see if it works.  Going to buy and esata to esata cable
then I'm going to buy this converter esata to USB:
This is my only alternative.  Wish me luck.

Paxter,

Any luck with the eSATA/USB 2.0 converter?
