writing failure, base heating up

What is going on with my FreeAgent Pro? The base is heating up easily, and when it does this, my computer will finally stop recognizing this external drive, and often give me an error message saying "writing failure ..." At first, I thought it was an issue of my USB malfunctioning. Ironically, all other hardware I have do work well with my USB's. I came across other FreeAgent owners in this forum also encountered  this kind of problem too. Pls let me know how to fix this. Pls help. Thank you.

Please see the Common Issues thread at the top of this board for a link to troubleshooting delayed write failures.

I also had this problem when copying lots of files to/from the FAP500.
But in my instance it was because the PC was still using a USB 1.1 card, which results in very slow copying speeds - and therefore creates a heat issue as well, if copying a large quantity of data.

No problems with USB 2.
But I won't copy more than 4GB (200 files) at a time.

I sometimes also run P2P torrent sharing direct from the drive, in this instance, after a few hours heat can be an issue with the drive.
Not an ideal drive for long-term P2P sharing I think.

These drives are consistent if treated with Care.

Re: writing failure, base heating up

Is there a possibility to add a fan to a vent area?   I did that with a Maxtor external, now the base is not hot.
I also used the 12v external power cord to power the fan.  I should post those photos.
Some of these cases are pretty well sealed.  If you are running it constantly, alas not running it as a backup only, then that may not have been accounted for in the heat dispersion factor.
Is the device on a rug, where any vents are blocked.  Is it out in the open, not in a cubby-hole.
